Team USA (+195) vs. Germany (+164), Draw (+225)

Both the USA and Germany knew that the road to World Cup glory would, in all likelihood, run through one another. The pre-tournament co-favorites hoped it wouldn’t be until the finals but, as (rotten) luck would have it, they’ll have to square off in the semis tonight at Stade Olympique in Montreal, Canada (7:00 PM Eastern).

Both the US and Germany looked somewhat lackluster in their respective quarterfinals. The Americans edged out China, 1-0, while Germany escaped France on penalties (1-1, 5-4 p.k.).

For Team USA – who have managed just seven goals through five matches – the lack of scoring has become a bigger and bigger story. Tonight, they’ll be facing a German side that has basically scored at will, potting 20 goals through five games while conceding just three.

But American manager Jill Ellis isn’t going to have her team sit back and wait for the German onslaught.

“[We’re] both attacking personalities,” Ellis said to the USA Today. “[We’ll have to] pick and choose [our] moments because, obviously, Germany is a tremendous transition team. It’s that measure and that balance but yeah, we’d like to get them involved in our attack.”

While the Germans would have liked to dispatch France in 90 minutes, the reality is that they were facing a highly-skilled, highly-motivated Les Bleus squad that has arguably developed into the third powerhouse of women’s soccer. For German manager Silvia Neid, just getting by France in any capacity gives her confidence going forward.

“Winning such a tough game as against France makes you very confident,” Neid said in her press conference. “[B]ut we had to play for 120 minutes, we have some injured players, we have to rest and to recover,” .

Germany are currently on a 15-game unbeaten streak, while the US haven’t lost in five straight. Add in the fact that three of the last four head to head have ended in a draw, and this one seems destined for more penalties.

Pick: Draw (+225).
