Winning 13 games last season puts the Michigan Stage Spartans in a position of pressure as most people expect them to repeat that performance. The Spartans need to start by winning the Big Ten title for the second year in a row where they are listed +400, second best to the -125 from Ohio State.

The Spartans basically will have a new home this season as they spent $24.5 million in renovations to the north side of Spartan Stadium.

“Excited about the opening of the north-end zone because it has a positive impact on so many different people that are a part of athletics including student-athletes, donors, fans and officials, ” Athletic director Mark Hollis said. “Nearly everyone that is part of Spartan Saturdays.

“The facility is one that will be used every day. It connects to the Red Cedar and historic part of our campus in an amazingly positive way. Greg Ianni and everyone that was involved in the design exceeded expectations.”

The Spartans were one of the best teams in 2013 with QB Connor Cook throwing 2849 yards, 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the season; he was named the MVP of the Big Ten Conference last season and is rated +2600 to win the Heisman Trophy.

“If you have a target on your back then, everyone is going to be gunning for you, especially because the expectations are so high,” Cook said. “We know that and we’re ready for it. We’ve been working extra hard this past offseason. We’re going to keep working hard in the fall camp, but I think we have the guys and that we can continue to compete at a high level, continue to win, even if the target is on our back.”

The Spartans defense was crucial last season, allowing less than two touchdown per games (13.2 PPG), and five of their starters are returning, meaning that as the offense, the expectations are high for them.

With the new playoff system, the Spartans might have a chance to win the National Championship if they win 13 games again. Michigan State is +2500 to win the 2014/2015 College Football Championship; also the College Football betting odds have Regular Season Wins in 9.5m with the UNDER listed as the favorite bet -140 and +110 the OVER.

It will be a shame if the Spartans don’t make it to the four-team playoffs; they have the entire right tools do it.
