Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-3, 194 o/u)

After ending the Golden State Warriors’ 16-game win streak last night, the Memphis Grizzlies (20-4) face another crucible tonight as they travel to San Antonio to face the defending NBA champion Spurs (17-7) at the AT&T Center (8:30 p.m. Eastern).

This game will feature two of the top-five defenses in the NBA going head to head;  the Spurs are second in the league, allowing 94.9 PPG and the Grizzlies are fourth at 95.5. However, San Antonio could be missing the some or all of Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Kawhi Leonard, and Tiago Splitter, who are hurt with back, hamstring, hand, and calf injuries, respectively.  The latest reports are that Leonard and Parker are out for tonight, while Ginobili and Splitter are questionable.

The defending champs haven’t had a great December, going 5-4 through the first half of the month. The Spurs suffered surprise losses to the Los Angeles Lakers (112-110) and Utah Jazz (100-96).

On the other side of the floor, Memphis leads the Southwest Division and has the second-best record in the NBA (behind only Golden State). The Grizzlies play stifling defense and are plodding and tactical on O. Led by center Marc Gasol, forward Zach Randolph, and point guard Mike Conley, the Grizzlies are dreaming of nothing less than an NBA title this season. Knocking off the defending champs on their home floor, one night after upending the Warriors, would serve notice to the rest of the league – if they haven’t gotten it already – that the Grizzlies are for real.

San Antonio has won nine of the past ten meetings with Memphis, though. If you’re looking for a trend, the total has gone over in the last seven, and sits at a low 194 for tonight. Both Spurs’ and Grizzlies’ games average over 196 points this year, so the over could be worth a look.
