The New York Yankees are still pushing the last buttons to get a wild card spot in the American League, but they found out this Wednesday they will have to rally without their captain Derek Jeter, who won’t make a comeback for this season.

“I think it’s important that we don’t put him in a position to have further damage,” General manager Brian Cashman said. “So today I met with Derek and told him this is what we’ve decided to do. Obviously it’s not an easy situation.”

Jeter’s season ended officially in 17 games due to complications with his broken ankle.

“It’s very disappointing not to be able to play, especially this time of year,” Jeter said. “This is when I want to play the most. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The entire year has been pretty much a nightmare for me physically, so I guess it’s fitting that it ends like this.”

He batted .190, with one home run and seven RBIs in those 17 games, but he never felt 100% despite attempting to comeback all season.

“It seemed like every time he came back, he was fine and then he would play a couple of days and something would happen,” manager Joe Girardi said. “It seemed to be the repeated days that seemed to get to him a little bit. And that was frustrating to him, and it was frustrating to all of us because we wanted him out there. And I think that’s why we decided to shut him down.”

The Yankees are 10.5 games behind the AL East leaders Boston Red Sox and will have series against Boston, Toronto, San Francisco Tampa Bay and Houston to close the regular season.
