To the surprise of many, Wales has its own premier soccer league. Often thought of as the English Premier League’s estranged second cousin, the Welsh Premier League has actually been around for nearly 25 years. Currently comprised of 12 teams, the league has been dominated by The New Saints (based out of Powys) of late. “TNS” are four-time defending champs and have won the title a record nine times since Wales first established a domestic league in 1992.

This year looks to be no different. The New Saints are undefeated after nine fixtures and lead the standings with 19 points (5-4-0), three clear of second-place Newtown AFC (5-1-3, 16 pts) and Bala Town (4-4-1, 16 pts).

What are the chances TNS are dethroned this season? We take a look at the odds for the Lilliputian league, below.

Odds to win the 2015-16 Welsh Premier League title:

The New Saints (1/4): Not only are The New Saints undefeated and in first place, but they also lead the WPL in goals for (19) and goals against (4). They have yet to conceded more than once in a game. There is still plenty of time for the likes of Newtown, Bala, and Airbus to bridge the gap, but recent history suggests that won’t transpire; TNS cruised to the title last year, finishing 18 points clear of runners-up Bala Town and losing just one game all year. Couple that with TNS’ strong start to the 2015 season, and the four-time defending champs are massive favorites to make it five in a row.

Airbus UK Broughton (7/1): Airbus are already six points behind TNS and have struggled to find consistency, losing their last two games in a row, including an embarrassing home defeat against Newtown (4-1). They remain second in the odds, though, thanks, in large part, to being the only team to beat TNS last year (1-0 at home). That said, the Wingmakers have never won the WPL.

Newtown AFC (10/1): Just like Airbus, Newtown AFC have never won the Welsh domestic league in any of its incarnations. They do have two second-place finishes on their resume, though (1995-96 and 1997-98). They don’t play TNS until a brace of matches on Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. If they can stay within striking distance of TNS until then, maybe – just maybe – they can give their fans the best Christmas present they could ask for.

Bala Town (20/1): The Lakesiders finished second in the standings last season, but – as mentioned – they were 18 points behind TNS at the end of the year. Currently tied for second in the league, Bala’s prospects looked good short days ago when they drew TNS (0-0). But the team is really struggling to score (11 goals through nine games) and recently dropped a home game to fourth-place Aberystwyth Town. Don’t expect Bala to seriously contend for the title this year.
