Online sportsbooks are expecting a back-and-forth battle today when the Cal. State – Bakersfield Roadrunners (16-14) play the Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros (18-15) at Orleans Arena as part of the WAC Tournament. Texas Rio Grande Valley was a short 2-point favorite when the odds first opened, while the total started at 135. The game tips off at 5:30 pm ET.
The Roadrunners are stronger on offense than defense, but are not overly effective at either end. Their offense is 153rd nationally in offensive efficiency, and enter the game averaging 71 points per game (216th). They shoot 40-percent from the floor and 33-percent from beyond the arc (237th).
On defense, the problems are more concerning. Cal. State – Bakersfield is surrendering 71 PPG, which puts them 165th in the country, and is a dismaying 230th in defensive rating. If this team is going to reach its full potential, it’s going to need more at the defensive end.
Offensively, they are paced by Jarkel Joiner, who’s averaging a team-leading 16 points per game. On the boards, James Suber leads the way with 8 boards per game.
The Roadrunners won’t crush you on the boards, but they aren’t the worst of the worst. They are currently 112th in the country, pulling down 34 rebounds a game.
Cal. State – Bakersfield is coming off a 76-61 loss to Utah Valley. Rickey Holden led the team with 15 points, not enough to overcome a relatively unproductive game from Joiner (7 points).
The Roadrunners will be facing a Texas Rio Grande Valley team that is downright dreadful offensively, currently 313th in offensive rating. That has translated to the Vaqueros averaging a scant 70 points a night, 248th in the country.
The Vaqueros at least have a passable defense. They currently sit 68th in defensive rating and allow 70 PPG (141st).
Terry Winn III has been their go-to scorer, scoring 13 points a night, while Lesley Varner II leads the team on the glass, pulling down 5 RPG.
But, as a team, Texas Rio Grande Valley is horrendous on the glass, recording 30 rebounds a night, which ranks 301st in America. Cal. State – Bakersfield will certainly have the edge there.
The Vaqueros are coming off an L in their last game, falling to California Baptist 82-79. Winn III led the way as usual with 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to get by the Lancers.
That loss dropped the Vaqueros to 4th in the WAC, while the Roadrunners finished in 5th after getting edged by Utah Valley.
Cal. State – Bakersfield is 15-15-0 ATS, while Texas Rio Grande Valley is 23-9-1 ATS.
