Syracuse (9-3) is the underdog against West Virginia (8-3) in the Camping World Bowl at Camping World Stadium on Friday (December 28, 2018, 17:15ET).
The betting line opened at -7 for West Virginia, and then contracted to about -1. The over/under for this game is set at 67.5, and betting the under is a deeply troubled thing to do here.
Syracuse is at the tail end of one of their best seasons in recent memory. The Orange went 9-3, finished second in their division, beat Florida State, and came within a hair’s breadth of beating Clemson in September.
Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey completed 59.8% of his passes this season for 2,565 yards and 17 touchdowns. Moe Neal gained 909 yards from scrimmage and rushed for 5 touchdowns, averaging a respectable 5.7 yards per carry.
As a whole, Syracuse gained 471.8 yards per game and scored 40.8 points per game. The defense allowed 426.8 yards and 27.8 points per game, while Alton Robinson led the team with 10 sacks this season.
West Virginia almost did the impossible, and were playoff contenders until deep in the season. The Mountaineers finished just third in the Big 12, but with wins over Texas and TCU, plus a high-flying offense, looked ready to challenge Oklahoma.
The Mountaineers offense features QB Will Grier, who passed for 3,864 yards and 37 TD’s this season. Grier completed 67.0% of his passes, which works out to a passer rating of 175.5. Unfortunately for West Virginia fans, Will Grier will not be participating in this game, and in his place we’ll see sophomore Jack Allison. Allison went 6-10 for 75 yards, a touchdown and an interception this year, and talented as he might be, WVU is almost certain to regress a little in this game.
Kennedy McKoy ran for 823 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging a strong 5.7 yards per carry. The Mountaineers offense is one of the best around.
Altogether, West Virginia averaged 520.4 yards per game and 42.3 points. The defense allowed 405.5 yards and 26.5 points per game. David Long Jr. recorded 7 sacks this season.
Camping World Bowl Betting Advice
Both teams have been excellent on offense this season and bettors might expect a shootout. The two teams have a combined over/under record of 14-9, which should be tempting. The over/under on this game is set at 67.5, although it’s an old betting axiom that we should take the points (+1.5 for Syracuse, in this case) in a shootout.
