Matchup Overview

Matchup Overview

Georgia (11-1) is the underdog against Alabama (12-0) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday (December 1, 2018, 16:00ET).

The spread started at a healthy -13.0 points for the Crimson Tide. They’ve gone a tempting 12-0 straight up as favorites this year, and 8-4-0 against the spread. The Bulldogs have not been underdogs so far this season, so they have no record in this position.

Georgia Bulldogs (11-1, 4th in Playoff Committee Rankings)

Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm completed 69.1% of his passes this season for 2,236 yards and 24 touchdowns. Fromm is an efficient quarterback, with a passer rating of 179.4 this season. D’Andre Swift gained 1,166 yards from scrimmage and rushed for 9 touchdowns, averaging an excellent 6.9 yards per carry.

The Bulldogs also have former #1 recruit Justin Fields waiting in the wings, if something happens to Jake Fromm or the UGA offense needs a kick start. That might not be likely, as the team gained 478.9 yards and scored 39.6 points per game.

The defense allowed only 317.3 yards and 18.7 points per game, while D’Andre Walker led the way with 7 sacks this season. Georgia ranks among the best in the country on both sides of the ball, and their showdown with the #1 Alabama is hotly anticipated.

Alabama Crimson Tide (12-0, 1st in Playoff Committee Rankings)

The Crimson Tide offense features QB Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for 3,189 yards and 36 TD’s this season. Tagovailoa completed 70.3% of his passes, good for a passer rating of 212.5. Damien Harris ran for 962 yards and 7 touchdowns, averaging a commendable 6.1 yards per carry. The Crimson Tide offense is truly elite, and its backup quarterback (Jalen Hurts) was the 2016 SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Tagovailoa is well on his way to winning a Heisman, but it’s not like the team relies on him to win.

Altogether, Alabama averaged 535.9 yards per game and 48.9 points. The defense allowed a stifling 283.8 yards and 13.5 points per game. Isaiah Buggs recorded 10 sacks this season. Most of the players you see on defense will play in the NFL one day. Quinnen Williams will almost certainly go in the first round. So will Raekwon Davis.

Betting Advice

This is a clash of titans, as both teams are among the best on both sides of the ball. Since differences in skill diminish the higher you go on the rankings board, it’s a little strange to see such a large spread in this game. While I’d never advocate for betting against Alabama, I’d certainly understand taking the points here.
