Online sportsbooks have made it clear we shouldn’t expect a tight game on Friday, March 15 at AT&T Center as the Spurs opened as 13.0 point favorites against the Knicks. Tip off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST.
That’s what happens when two of the NBA’s sloppiest defensive teams tangle.
The Spurs have been letting opposing teams score with impunity this season. They rank 15th in most points allowed at 110.9 points per game, and are allowing opponents to shoot 47.0% from the field and 36.0% from deep. San Antonio forces 12.3 turnovers per game, and is 22nd in the league in rebounding. Their defensive indifference could be their downfall.
Ditto for the Knicks, who are 24th in most points allowed at 113.7 points per contest, and are letting opponents hit 47.0% of their field goals and 36.0% of their treys. New York is 19th in the league in rebounding at 44.8 boards per night. That kind of effort just won’t cut it against most teams.
These two teams have already met once this season. The last time they played on February 25th, 2019, New York won 130-118 behind 27 points from Damyean Dotson.
The Knicks are fresh off a 98-103 loss versus the Pacers in Indiana in which they dished out 22 dimes and scratched and clawed their way to four steals. Emmanuel Mudiay torched the Pacers for 21 points. The Spurs, meanwhile, are hot on the heels of a 105-112 win vs the Mavericks in Dallas in which they were 8 for 22 from deep were out-rebounded 50-44.
All told, the Knicks have won two of their last ten games and are 15th in the Eastern Conference, while the Spurs have lost three of their last ten and are sixth in the Western Conference.
The 13.0-point spread isn’t the only angle you can take advantage of. Sportsbooks have also set a big over/under total of 217. Keep in mind that New York is 28-39-1 against the spread this season and 31-37-0 over/under, compared to 37-30-1 ATS and 40-28-0 over/under for San Antonio.
