Don’t expect a tight game tonight at Vivint Smart Home Arena as the Jazz opened as 9.0 point favorites versus the Lakers. Tip off is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. EST.
That’s what happens when one of the NBA’s best defensive teams tangles with one of the league’s worst offensive teams.
The Jazz have been doing an outstanding job of shutting down opponents in 2018-19. They rank fourth in fewest points allowed at 105.5 points per game, and are limiting opposing teams to 46.0% from the field and 37.0% from beyond the arc.
Utah uses its size and length to force 14.9 turnovers per game, and is 22nd in the NBA in rebounding. Add it all up and you have a team that can thrive even when its offense falls flat.
Speaking of faltering offenses, the Lakers are generating 112.2 points on 44.0% shooting from the floor and 34.0% from downtown. They’re eighth in rebounds and 14th in assists. They’ll need to be far more efficient tonight to have any chance of earning a victory.
These two teams have already met once this season. The last time they played on November 24th, 2018, Los Angeles won 90-83 behind 24 points from Brandon Ingram.
The Lakers are fresh off a 113-100 win versus the Pistons in Los Angeles in which they dished out 30 dimes and scratched and clawed their way to five steals. Kyle Kuzma torched the Pistons for 41 points. The Jazz, meanwhile, are coming off of a 93-106 win against the Magic in Orlando in which they were 12 for 33 from deep and won the war on the glass 53-48.
All told, the Lakers have won four of their last ten games and are eighth in the Western Conference, while the Jazz have lost four of their previous ten and are ninth in the Western Conference.
The 9.0-point spread isn’t the only angle you can take advantage of. Bookmakershave also set a robust over/under total of 217. Bear in mind that Los Angeles is 18-23-1 against the spread this year and 16-26-0 over/under, compared to 21-20-1 ATS and 21-21-0 over/under for Utah.
