Don’t expect a tight game tonight at Toyota Center as the Rockets opened as 9.5 point favorites versus the Mavericks. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.
That’s what happens when two of the league’s most lackluster defensive teams tangle.
The Rockets have been letting opposing teams score with impunity this season. They rank 14th in most points allowed at 111.0 points per game, and are allowing opponents to shoot 47.0% from the field and 34.0% from deep. Houston forces 14.9 turnovers per game, and is 27th in the league in rebounding. Their defensive indifference could be their downfall.
Ditto for the Mavericks, who are 11th in most points allowed at 108.5 points per contest, and are letting opposing teams hit 47.0% of their field goals and 34.0% of their three-pointers. Dallas is 11th in the NBA in rebounding at 45.9 boards per game. That kind of effort just won’t cut it against most teams.
These two clubs have faced one another two times in 2018-19, with the Mavericks winning on two occasions. The last time they clashed on December 8th, 2018, Dallas won 107- 104 behind 21 points from Luka Doncic.
The Rockets are hot on the heels of a 117-112 loss against the Thunder in Oklahoma City in which they were 16 for 45 from deep were out-rebounded 63-49. The Mavericks, meanwhile, are fresh off a 102-101 win against the Trail Blazers in Dallas in which they handed out 20 dimes and had six swipes. Luka Doncic torched the Trail Blazers for 28 points.
Overall, the Mavericks have won six of their previous ten games and are 11th in the Western Conference, while the Rockets have lost four of their previous ten and are fifth in the Western Conference.
The 9.5-point spread isn’t the only angle you can take advantage of. Bookmakershave also set a generous over/under total of 221. Keep in mind that Dallas is 34-20-1 against the spread this season and 24-31-0 over/under, compared to 25-29-1 ATS and 31-24-0 over/under for Houston.
