Matchup Overview

Are the Raptors finally ready to reverse years of playoff futility? We should find out on Sunday, May 5 as Toronto takes on Philadelphia in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Tip off time for this must-see matchup is 3:30 p.m. EST at Wells Fargo Center.

Philly Pounded Toronto in Game 3

The Raptors find themselves in a 1-2 hole after being crushed 116-95 on Thursday evening. Joel Embiid shook off a subpar performance in Games 1 and 2 to explode for 33 points in just 28 minutes. The All-Star center ran circles around Marc Gasol and feasted at the line, where he hit 12 of his 13 free-throw attempts. He also pulled broke the laws of physics by whipping out a massive windmill dunk late in the fourth quarter:

Embiid’s offensive exploits were impressive, but coach Brett Brown was more enamored with his center’s defensive presence. “You can talk about some finesse post moves and that, but I go to defense,” Brown said afterwards. “His rim protection and blocking shot ability tonight stood out as much to me as anything in an incredible performance.”

Lowry Has Gone MIA

Game 3 was supposed to be a triumphant homecoming for Kyle Lowry, who grew up in Philadelphia and attended Villanova. Instead it turned into a nightmare as the five-time All-Star shot 2-10 and finished with just seven points. Lowry has now failed to crack double-digits in four of his last eight games, including a 0-point stinker against the Magic to begin the first-round.

To his credit, Lowry hasn’t tried to blame anyone else for his struggles. “Me personally, I’ve got to play better,” he said after the game. “I can’t go out there and shoot 2-for-10 and miss open threes. We’re getting good looks.”

No player personifies Toronto’s playoff struggles better than Lowry, and no player will receive more blame if the Raptors fail to advance to the NBA Finals.

Toronto’s Bench Has Been a Disaster

Toronto’s bench mob was outscored once again in the postseason, falling 23-15 to Philly’s reserves. 15 points is a pitiful amount of production for a group logging so many minutes.

The Raptors desperately need more offense from Serge Ibaka, who had just four points on Thursday night, and Fred VanVleet, who went 0-7 in 21 minutes.
