Don’t expect a nail biter on Friday, March 15 at Toyota Center as the Rockets opened as 14.0 point favorites versus the Suns. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.
That’s what happens when two of the league’s worst defensive teams tangle.
The Rockets have been letting opposing teams score with impunity this season. They rank 12th in most points allowed at 110.2 points per game, and are allowing opponents to shoot 47.0% from the field and 34.0% from beyond the arc. Houston forces 15.0 turnovers per game, and is 28th in the league in rebounding. Their defensive indifference could be their downfall.
Ditto for the Suns, who rank 28th in most points allowed at 115.9 points per game, and are letting opposing teams hit 47.0% of their field goals and 37.0% of their three-pointers. Phoenix is 30th in the NBA in rebounding at 40.3 boards per game. They’ll need to do far better tonight to give themselves a fighting chance.
These two teams have already met once this season. The last time they played on February 5th, 2019, Houston won 118-110 behind 44 points from James Harden.
The Rockets are hot on the heels of a 106-104 loss vs the Warriors in Golden State in which they shot 11 for 41 from deep were out-rebounded 48-40. The Suns, meanwhile, are fresh off a 97-114 loss vs the Jazz in Phoenix in which they dished out 21 dimes and scratched and clawed their way to eight steals. Devin Booker led the way with 27 points.
Overall, the Suns have won five of their previous ten games and are 15th in the Western Conference, while the Rockets have dropped one of their previous ten and are fourth in the Western Conference.
The 14.0-point spread isn’t the only angle you can take advantage of. Online sportsbooks have also set a high over/under total of 225. Bear in mind that Phoenix is 31-38-0 against the spread this year and 30-39-0 over/under, compared to 31-35-2 ATS and 36-32-0 over/under for Houston.
