The Midwest has caught everyone’s attention this year, being dubbed the “Region of Death”. The No. 1-seeded Kansas Jayhawks are always a difficult team to trust, having failed to make a Final Four appearance since 2012, and being eliminated in the Round of 32 twice in the last four years.

It gets even more difficult to trust Bill Self’s squad when you notice the no. 2 seed in their region is Duke (3rd in KenPom Ratings) – arguably the most talented team in the nation – and the no. 3 seed belongs to Michigan State (6th in KenPom) – the best frontcourt in the nation. Whoever does emerge from the Midwest will certainly be tried-and-tested.

The West region also has a fair amount of intrigue. The top-seeded Xavier Musketeers are one of the worst no. 1 seeds in recent memory (14th in KenPom); the no. 2-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels are very streaky from behind the three-point line and lack truly elite talent; while no. 3 Michigan lacks the backcourt-production needed to make a deep run in the tournament. It’s led to many analysts siding with no. 4 Gonzaga in the West.

This isn’t to suggest that the other two no. 1 seeds (Virginia and Villanova) have easy paths to the Final Four.
