After handing the Orlando Apollos their first loss of the season, can the Arizona Hotshots take down the San Diego Fleet in Week 7? See the odds and our picks for all four games this weekend.
  • The Arizona Hotshots handed the Orlando Apollos their first defeat of the season in Week 6
  • The Hotshots were preseason favorites to win the AAF
  • The win halted Arizona’s ended a three-game losing streak

The Arizona Hotshots were finally able to do what no AAF club had accomplished through the first five weeks of the AAF season. They beat the Orlando Apollos.

Arizona came up with a defensive gameplan to place a governor on the Apollo’s league-leading offense.

Arizona was the first team all season to hold Orlando under 20 points. The Hotshots were the preseason pick to win the AAF’s inaugural championship. But they’d dropped three in a row before landing that loss on the Apollos.

Should you once again view the Hotshots as a hot bet?

Let’s break down all of the Week 7 AAF action.

Orlando Apollos vs Atlanta Legends

Teams Moneyline Spread Total
Orlando Apollos -450 -8.5 (-110) O 42 (-110)
Atlanta Legends +315 +8.5 (-110) U 42 (-110)

*All odds taken 3/21

Kickoff: Sat, Mar 23 at 3pm EST

All goods things must end but that doesn’t mean the world is coming to an end. That’s the approach Apollos coach Steve Spurrier is taking to their first loss of the season.

Certainly, the 2-4 Legends are a good team to face in order to get things back on the right track. Orlando blasted them 40-6 in Week 1.

After winning two in a row, the Legends gave up 37 points in last week’s home loss to San Antonio. QB Aaron Murray was picked off three times.  But they do have the AAF’s No. 1 pass defense.

Atlanta is just 1-2 against the spread at home and all three Legends home games have gone over.

Pick: Apollos -450, -8.5, Over 42

Salt Lake Stallions vs San Antonio Commanders

Teams Moneyline Spread Total
Salt Lake Stallions n/a +5 (-110) O 40.5 (-110)
San Antonio Commanders n/a -5 (-110) U 40.5 (-110)

Kickoff: Sat, Mar 23 at 8pm EST

Quietly, the 4-2 Commanders are playing some impressive football, but with all the hype devoted to the Apollos, they seem to be flying under the radar.

San Antonio just completed the month from hell in fine style, going 3-1 through four straight road games.

The Commanders hung up 37 points at Atlanta last week and the defense forced four turnovers. They are also 4-2 ATS this season.

The 2-4 Stallions are still seeking their first road win of the season.

They won 22-9 at home last week but that was against 1-5 Memphis, the only team with a worse record than Salt Lake.

Pick: Commanders -5, Under 40.5

San Diego Fleet vs Arizona Hotshots

Teams Moneyline Spread Total
San Diego Fleet +140 +3.5 (-110) O 39.5 (-110)
Arizona Hotshots -175 -3.5 (-110) U 39.5 (-110)

Kickoff: Sun, Mar 24 at 4pm EST

Arizona returned to prominence by ending a three-game losing streak with a win over the unbeaten Apollos. Now the Hotshots can make another bold move toward the top of the West Division with a victory over San Diego.

The defense limited Orlando to a season-low 17 points and held Apollos QB Garrett Gilbert to a 47.9 completion percentage, also a season low.

Hotshots RB Jhurell Pressley ran for two TDs in the win and leads the AAF with 343 rushing yards.

In this duel of 3-3 teams, the Fleet are the cardiac kids of the AAF. For the second week in a row, San Diego’s game ended via a walkoff field goal. This time, though, it was in a loss to Birmingham.

Pick: Hotshots -175, -3.5, under 40

Birmingham Iron vs Memphis Express

Teams Moneyline Spread Total
Birmingham Iron -165 -3 (-110) O 37 (-110)
Memphis Express +130 +3 (-110) U 37 (-110)

Kickoff: Sun, Mar 24 at 8pm EST

The 1-5 Express are the worst team in the AAF but they made the biggest news this week, signing 2012 Heisman Trophy-winning QB Johnny Manziel.

The former NFL and CFL starter won’t get the nod under center – Express coach Mike Singletary has confirmed Brandon Silvers as his starter – but Manziel is expected to see some action.

Memphis runs the weakest offense in the AAF (239 yards per game) and have used three QBs this season – Silvers, former New York Jet Christian Hackenberg and ex-LSU starter Zach Mettenberger.

Mettenberger is hurt while Hackenberg and Silvers have combined to throw one touchdown pass and four interceptions in six games.

The 4-2 Iron blanked the Express 26-0 in Week 1. With last week’s 32-29 win over San Diego, the Iron handed the Fleet their first home loss of the season.

Benched Iron QB Luis Perez came off the sidelines to replace an injured Keith Price and threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns.

Those were his first TD passes of the season. But Perez is also prone to poor decision making and was picked off twice.

Pick: Iron -3, Under 37
