Cats Poised to Feast on Slumping Bombers

The Geelong Cats continued to roll with last week’s 72-61 win over the Western Bulldogs, and now look to make it six in a row as they face off against the Essendon Bombers on Sunday as strong 18.5-point favorites. The Cats win over Western marked their closest contest during their current tear, with each of their previous four wins coming by at least 28 points.

Now trailing first-place Port Adelaide by just four points on the AFL ladder, Geelong has gained steady momentum on the AFL Premiership futures, where they are pegged as +380 second favorites. However, the club cannot take Essendon for granted after falling to defeat in two of their past three meetings.

The Bombers look toward their second straight contest at the Gabba lagging as +240 moneyline underdogs in their date with Geelong. Essendon is coming off a disappointing 60-45 loss to the West Coast Eagles in a match which they never held the lead. Overall, the club has struggled to contain opposing offenses while posting just one win in their past five outings, surrendering 69 points per match during that stretch.

Now six points adrift of a spot among the top eight, the Bombers will have to bring a sense of desperation to this contest, particularly early on after failing to score more than 10 first-quarter points in each of their past five outings.

Look for the Cats to march to a dominating victory in this Round 16 matchup.

Picks: Geelong Cats -18.5 (-110); Geelong lead at every quarter (-105)

Eagles Attractive Favorites in Date with Bulldogs

After returning to their winning ways with their win over Essendon earlier this week, the West Coast Eagles take on the Western Bulldogs as 7.5-point chalk. Winners in eight straight before suffering a lopsided 88-61 loss to Richmond two weeks ago, the Eagles are positioned to leapfrog the idle Tigers on the ladder with a victory in Sunday’s contest.

The Eagles offense has steadily produced, scoring at least 60 points in 10 straight contests, and their recent loss to Richmond marks the only time in their past five outings that they have allowed more than 50 points.

That is bad news for the Bulldogs, who enter Sunday’s matchup listed as +130 moneyline underdogs. Western remains in the hunt for a spot among the top eight despite last week’s loss to Geelong. The club has risen to the occasion against struggling opponents, posting dominating wins in recent dates with the Melbourne Demons and Adelaide Crows.

However, Western have struggled against top-flight opponents, allowing an average of 78.25 points in recent losses to Geelong, Richmond, Port Adelaide, and Brisbane. Look for the Eagles to win and cover in a high-scoring affair.

Picks: West Coast Eagles -7.5 (-110); West Coast winning margin 1-19 (+240)

Adelaide on a High After Halting Epic Slide

The Adelaide Crows finally earned their first victory of the season in their last outing, a decisive 83-48 win over the freefalling Hawthorn Hawks, but face an uphill battle as 19.5-point underdogs in Tuesday’s date with the Greater Western Sydney Giants. Losers of 16 straight prior to their victory over the Hawks, the Crows have a long way to go in their bid to return to respectability.

Adelaide has scored 38 or fewer points in each of their past three dates as the home team, falling to defeat by an average margin of over 34 points in those contests. However, the Crows have managed to hold their own in recent matchups with GWS, averaging 85 points per match, capped by an 82-61 win in their most recent meeting in June 2019.

Scoring has been a massive problem for the Giants, who enter this Round 16 matchup as lofty -330 moneyline favorites. GWS managed to eke out a narrow 48-39 win over Carlton in Round 15 action earlier this week, but have failed to top 50 points in three of their past four outings.

Despite their recent uneven play, the Giants sit in control of eighth place on the AFL ladder going into Round 16. However, 19.5 points is a massive spread to cover, even against a woeful Crows squad that is now emboldened after getting their first taste of victory in 2020.

Picks: Adelaide Crows +19.5 (-110); GWS winning margin 1-39 (-140)
