Upsets abounded in Round 3 of AFL action, with favorites covering in just two of eight contests, and losing outright in four matches. The biggest surprise of the week came early on, as the defending champion Richmond Tigers fell 71-39 to the Hawthorn Hawks as heavy 16-point chalk, while the Western Bulldogs tallied a 57-33 win over the Greater Western Sydney Giants, while listed as 9-point underdogs.

The unexpected results have contributed to a shakeup in the Aussie Rules futures, where Collingwood now sit as +350 favorites after remaining unbeaten with an 81-37 demolition of St. Kilda. The Magpies enjoy a golden opportunity to strengthen their position as premiership favorites as they visit the Giants in Round 4, while Richmond looks for redemption in their date with the Saints. Not to be overlooked are the first-place Port Adelaide Power, who aim to improve to 4-0-0 when they host the West Coast Eagles.

Magpies Vaunted Defense Likely Too Much for Slumping Giants

The Magpies continued to play stifling defense in last week’s domination of the Saints. Collingwood has now surrendered just 35.7 points per game during a 2-0-1 win-loss-draw start and allowed more than 56 points just once in nine contests since last August.

Collingwood also rides a four-match road win streak into Friday morning’s match. However, the club has struggled to contain the Giants offense in recent trips to Sydney, allowing over 106 points per match while falling to defeat in two of their past three.

The Giants have some work to do to regain their offensive touch following last week’s stunning 57-33 loss to the Bulldogs. GWS have averaged just 46.5 points per match over their past two outings and raised eyebrows after instigating an on-field brawl in last week’s contest.

GWS will need all the help they can get against the stingy Magpies after scoring just four goals last week and producing three of the six lowest match totals in club history since Week 21 of last season.

Tigers Aim to Rediscover Offense in Road Date with Saints

A date with St. Kilda may be just what the Richmond Tigers need to rebound following last week’s shocking loss to Hawthorn. The Tigers have struggled offensively, scoring just 75 total points in their past two outings. The mini-slump has brought a screeching halt to the 12-match win streak that lifted Richmond to the AFL premiership last season.

The loss of Dustin Martin to a rib injury played a role in the Tigers’ demoralizing defeat in Round 3. But while it remains unclear as to whether the Tigers’ captain will return to action on Saturday morning, it is tough to see the defending champions extending their winless streak to three matches, particularly against St. Kilda.

The Saints are one of the few AFL clubs to perform as expected in Round 3, falling 81-37 to Collingwood. The loss marked a huge step back following an 88-49 rout of the Bulldogs in Round 2.

St. Kilda has posted wins in four straight contests on home turf, averaging a respectable 95 points per game in those contests. However, the Saints are currently mired in a four-match losing streak against Richmond, during which they have fallen to defeat by an average margin of 39 points.

Port Adelaide Gunning for Fifth Straight Win

The Port Adelaide Power continued to roll with last week’s 70-41 victory over winless Fremantle. Now perched atop the AFL ladder, the Power are hoping to take advantage of the West Coast Eagles’ slump as they vie for a fifth straight win.

The Power have emerged as the AFL’s top defensive squad this season, surrendering just 105 total points in their three wins. They also sport the league’s top attack, scoring an average of 85.33 points per game. However, sports bettors looking to take the OVER should proceed with caution, with the total topping 110 just once in their three matches this season,

The West Coast Eagles have nowhere to go but up after another brutal performance in last week’s 74-44 loss to Brisbane as narrow 3.5-point underdogs. The Eagles have scored just 90 total points over their past two outings and rank 16th in the AFL in total goals scored.

The Eagles have now lost in four straight matches played away from their home at Perth Stadium. That does not bode well for the club, who will play in the Brisbane area for the foreseeable future due to restrictions resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
