The state of Arizona will follow in the footsteps of Michigan, Colorado, New Jersey, and others by legalizing online sports betting in September. Arizona online sports betting is set to launch on September 9th, 2021, right before the new NFL season starts.

Arizona recently made some changes to its original set of rules that are set to launch in September. On July 2nd, the Arizona Department of Gaming announced they are now welcoming double the amount of sportsbooks than what they originally had offered.

So what does this mean? How does this affect the big players like DraftKings and FanDuel? More importantly, what does this mean for you as a sports bettor looking to unlock action in Arizona?

Licenses, Licenses and More Licenses

The new sports betting rules in Arizona allow for 20 event wagering operator licenses. These licenses are split in half with, 10 going to Arizona sports teams/venues and 10 going to tribal casinos. There have been six sportsbooks that have struck up deals with venues and tribal casinos: DraftKings through the PGA, FanDuel with the Phoenix Suns, Caesars with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bally’s with Arizona’s WNBA team Phoenix Mercury, Kindred through the Quechan Tribe, and finally WynnBet with San Carlos Apache.

Having one of the 20 event wagering operator licenses includes having one retail location, and now with the rule change, two mobile platforms. This is massive news for a few companies at the moment. For example, Caesars has multiple online sportsbooks, which means they could have William Hill and Harrah’s, both in Arizona.

Big Player Advantages

Arizona is the first state that is legalizing sports betting where DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) was not legal beforehand. This allows for a much more open market, especially with the number of online sportsbooks Arizona will be offering.

Do not sign up for a sportsbook in Arizona without a promo code!

When Michigan legalized online sports betting in late January, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM dominated the market. These household names own almost 80% of the sports betting market in Michigan at this point. One of the reasons why DraftKings and FanDuel were successful in Michigan is because DFS was already legal before online sports betting. So, players who had accounts were able to transition with ease.

DraftKings and FanDuel won’t necessarily have this advantage in Arizona. This allows for some of the smaller sportsbooks to invest serious marketing dollars and offer sign-up offers to try and get their foot in the door before DraftKings and FanDuel take over the market. So be sure you do not sign up for a sportsbook in Arizona without taking advantage of the sweet promo codes coming your way!

What Does This Rule Change Mean for Sports Bettors?

To put it simply, this is great for sports bettors in Arizona. With so many sportsbooks in the market, bettors will have the opportunity to sign-up at multiple places and reap the benefits of each sportsbooks sign-up bonuses.

DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM will most likely still be the most used considering their brand name, but they might have to fight for it a little harder. DFS is still an appealing feature for sports bettors. Especially, if players have DFS accounts in other states or with friends, look for them to stick with what they know.

Line shopping will be at an all-time high, with double the amount of sports betting platforms available in Arizona come September 9th.
