Erickson Lubin’s Quest for Another WBC Title Shot

Lubin is positioned in a killer fight here opposite a 2012 Olympic pugilist who has also fought at a world title level as a pro.

Erickson Lubin is riding a four-fight winning streak heading into this bout. His last fight was a masterclass performance against Nathaniel Gallimore.

A win here for Lubin would not just punch his ticket for another title fight but it would give him a chance to avenge the only loss of his professional career.

Jermell Charlo and Jeison Rosario have a unification bout next week with the winner of Lubin vs Gausha getting the victor of that bout. Lubin has to be pining for a Charlo rematch and a chance for redemption from that bitter October 2017 defeat that saw him get halted in the first round.

Terrell Gausha’s Path to Number One Contendership

Despite going 1-1-1 across his last three fights, these performances showed what kind of a high-level Gausha is operating at. This bout with Lubin represents a chance for Gausha to pick up what would be by far the biggest name-value win of his pro career.

Gausha’s last outing against Austin Trout ended with neither man being declared a victor but there was a vocal segment of the sweet science community that thought Terrell Gausha did enough to earn the nod from the judges.

Normally Lubin would have an edge over opponents with his southpaw stance and unconventional use of angles as well as unorthodox footwork. The recent performances of Gausha against crafty lefties like Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout illustrate that he can thrive when competing against a southpaw adversary.

Main Card Picks for Lubin vs Gausha

  1. Jaron Ennis vs Juan Carlos Abreu: Ennis is 25-0 with 23 KOs while Abreu enters this one on the heels of back to back stoppage victories. Ennis is riding a 15 fight (T)KO streak heading into the Abreu bout. Abreu has shown his durability by not being stopped a single time across his five career losses. I think Abreu will take his first stoppage loss, Ennis will extend the stoppage streak to sixteen, and I think he gets it done inside of four rounds. Pick: Jaron Ennis (-5000)
  2. Tugstogt Nyambayar vs Cobia Breedy: Nyambayar captured the silver medal at the 2012 Olympics while Breedy has a spotless professional record of 15-0. Nyambayar has an 82 percent knockout rate and a cartoonish six-inch reach advantage in this prizefight. Ultimately, I see Nyambayar scoring his tenth pro-KO this weekend. I foresee him securing the stoppage inside of seven rounds. Pick: Tugstogt Nyambayar (-800)
