This contest pits two men ranked within the WBO’s top five at 147 pounds.

The winner here could really situate themselves in the queue for a future marquee bout in one of the deepest divisions in the sport.

Vergil Ortiz Jr’s Path to Retain

Ortiz Jr. is an undefeated warrior with a remarkable 100-percent finishing rate across 17 professional wins.

Vergil Ortiz Jr is ranked by the WBO as the division’s number one contender, just behind reigning kingpin Terence Crawford. The same Bud Crawford who previously fought Egidijus Kavaliauskas (ranked number five by the WBO right now).

The winner here makes a strong case for a crack at Crawford and an undisputed title bid. Whether for the first time or in a redemptive sophomore effort.

The 23-year-old phenom has an exciting, pressure-heavy style and the WBO international titleholder has demonstrable power in both hands.

Ortiz Jr has a Mean Machine blocking the road towards actualizing these lofty goals into reality though.

Egidijus Kavaliauskas’ Redemptive Path to WBO Glory

Egidijus Kavaliauskas has a notable 82-percent finishing rate across his professional wins. His only pro defeat is to a man that many see as the outright number one pound for pound ranked fighter in boxing today.

He since rebounded from that Crawford loss (a fight that saw Crawford challenged more than he has in many of his bouts) and resumed scoring highlight reel-worthy finishes.

These warriors have a great opportunity in front of them whereby they can solidify themselves as being among the top welterweights on the planet.

The weight category is one of the deeper divisions presently and the victor here enters rarified air. One that is littered with a number of huge names like the aforementioned Crawford, Manny Pacquiao, and Errol Spence to name just a few.

This bout is scheduled for 12 rounds but considering how both of these guys can thump, I do not think the scorecards of the ringside officials will play any role here.

I think there is good value in pursuing prop bets on this fight not going the distance (-400) and on Ortiz Jr winning via TKO or KO (-360).

As far as round betting goes, I can see Ortiz Jr getting it done somewhere between round 7 and round 9 (+1000, +1200, and +1400 respectively).

In summation, I favor the former over the latter in the upcoming Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Egidijus Kavaliauskas contest.

Pick: Vergil Ortiz Jr. (-1100)
