  • The 77th annual awards will be handed out on January 5, 2020
  • Nominees for Best Drama and Best Comedy see a mix of familiar favorites and new programs

The television world is a crowded place these days. Gone are the days of four core networks with little to no competition. With streaming platforms and subscription services upping their respective games, everyone has their finger in the television pot.

This year’s nominees for the Golden Globes are a testament to this notion. The nominees in categories for Best Drama and Best Musical or Comedy show some major breadth and a spectrum of variety in the offerings.

Learning about who’s who is the best way to start with categories about television. It’s important to consider each option carefully as a potential winner.

Best Television Series – Drama Odds

Nominee Odds
Succession -110
The Crown -120
The Morning Show +600
Big Little Lies +700
Killing Eve +1200

All Odds taken December 10

All of these series had big years and make complete sense to make up the nominees in this category. Naturally, there can only be one winner.

Looking at series’ Globes history provides a bit of insight. This year is the third nomination in this category for The Crown. So far, it’s won one of two times. Then there’s Big Little Lies. In a lifetime before it was slated to continue into a second season, Lies won a Globe for Best Miniseries.

Killing Eve has been nominated in this category before but not won. Succession sees its first nomination and The Morning Show, as a new program, sees its first nomination. Typically, looking to the Emmy Award winner could help, but that winner (Game of Thrones) didn’t see a nomination at the Globes.

This year’s season of The Crown didn’t seem to garner as much acclaim as previous years, while Killing Eve has actually gained momentum. Big Little Lies is still beloved but the second season definitely didn’t match the magic of its debut.

But of all the nominees, Succession is seeming the most likely to clean up. It’s a fan favorite and critical darling. Everyone seems to have a soft spot for this show, and its most recent season elevated the production values and plot lines.

Pick: Succession (-110)

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy Odds

Nominee Odds
Fleabag -450
The Politician +300
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel +400
Barry +1200
The Kominsky Method +1400

The nominees for the Golden Globes quasi-reflect the Emmy nominees, and this year the Emmy winner was Fleabag. For the Globes, both Maisel and Kominsky have won in previous years.

But even without as much of a decorated history, Barry shouldn’t be counted out just yet. Bill Hader shined more than ever this season, and it’s very easy to picture him winning the Globe. That is, if it wasn’t for a little something called Fleabag.

Fleabag saw some Emmy gold earlier this holiday season. The unique series resonated with fans as a breath of fresh air in a sea of familiar-sounding plot points and production formulas.

Netflix’s new darling program The Politician made a big wave when it debuted recently. But it is likely to be too fresh to start picking up awards just yet. Once the series has made a few more rounds it will surely be a big hit at awards season.

Pick: Fleabag (-450)
