IEM Katowice
G2 looks to pull together their first tournament victory of the 2021 season.
  • DreamHack Open Anaheim gets started on February 21st
  • The winner will receive $50,000 and a seed at DreamHack Masters Jonkoping
  • MiBR are the very slight favorites entering the group stage, but are they the best bet?

Eight teams are competing in DreamHack Open Anaheim from February 21st to 23rd. MiBR open as the favorites but only slightly over the likes of Complexity, FURIA and North. There really isn’t a clear favorite to win this DreamHack, with six of the eight teams having a fair shot of winning it all.

They Truly are Complex

Let’s start with Complexity. This team hasn’t been together for very long and they’ve shown the ability to beat the best CS:GO teams and lose to some lesser opponents. Back in November, Complexity added k0nfig and poizon to their rebuilt roster. Since then, there have been signs that this team could climb the ranks. They won the North American Qualifier for DreamHack Anaheim with a 2-0 win over eUnited. However, none of their recent results were more impressive than their shocking win over Astralis at BLAST Premier: Spring 2020.

A win over the best team in the world will undoubtedly bring some hype to this Complexity team. Following that win over Astralis, Complexity followed it up with another 2-0 over Vitality to secure a spot at the BLAST Premier: Spring Finals. So that’s the ceiling for Complexity. As mentioned before though, they can also drop matches to some teams well below them. No better example was their 2-1 loss to SMASH Esports in the Rio 2020 Open Qualifier.

Complexity is certainly a gamble because they could go 0-2 in their group, or they could run the table straight to the $50,000 grand prize.

 A Resurgence for ENCE?

ENCE hasn’t quite been the same since they moved on from aleksib. For the middle portion of 2019, they were fighting with Team Liquid in grand finals after grand finals. As 2019 came to an end, the results faded for ENCE, and unfortunately, those struggles have continued into 2020. Earlier this month, ENCE put up an incredibly disappointing performance at the ICE Challenge. They went 0-2 to both GODSENT and OG to leave the tournament without a single map win.

According to HLTV, ENCE is the top-ranked team at this tournament, but a lot of that high ranking comes from performances from months ago. ENCE really needs a strong showing here to build some confidence, but it’s really tough to wager on them after what went down at the ICE Challenge.

Stay away from MiBR

MiBR are the favorites but I would stay as far away from them as possible. Though they’ve still got some strong players like Fallen and TACO, they haven’t had a convincing win that would suggest they have the consistency to win this tournament. To be fair, that’s something that all of the teams competing at DreamHack Open Anaheim share. Since MiBR are the favorites, there just isn’t the value to bet on them here. Their strongest result of late came at the NA Qualifier for the IEM XIV – World Championship. They got to the grand finals thanks to wins over INTZ and Complexity but then lost in the finals to Cloud9.

At BLAST Premier,  MiBR looked decent but were forced out early after losing to Team Liquid and NIP. MiBR could absolutely win here, but I’d rather take a gamble since the field is so unclear.

Pick: To Win – Complexity (+400)

Finals Prediction

Although I view MiBR, ENCE and Complexity as my three top contenders, they’ve all been placed in Group B, and only two of them can advance to the playoffs. With that said a team like FURIA or North have a good shot of making the finals out of Group A. Whoever wins that Group A will likely make the finals since they’ll face the second seed out of Group B.

Picks: To Reach the Finals – FURIA (+175) & Complexity (+175)
