Two year ago the Atlanta Falcons were ever so close to going to the Super Bowl and sending hall of fame TE Tony Gonzalez into retirement with style. However, the 2013 season was a disaster, with the Falcons going 4-12 and falling to the back of the NFC South.

The good news for Atlanta fans is Matt Ryan posted decent numbers, leading the Falcons to the 7th best passing offense in the league (despite numerous high-profile injuries). The issue was in the running game (last in the league) and the defense, which was 21st against the pass and 31st against the rush.

While No. 1 pick Jake Matthews should help that offensive line pass and run block, it’s No. 2 pick defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman and No. 3 pick safety Dez Southward that the team hopes will lead the charge to a more aggressive Falcons defense.

Looking to this season, the Falcons face six playoff teams with an overall schedule featuring opponents boasting a .512 winning percentage last year (the 11th hardest in the league). Also, the Falcons play three sets of back-to-back road games.  Oddsmakers have the Falcons at 8 for o/u wins with the over paying out at -130.

Granted the NFC South is a solid division (Carolina and New Orleans are tough foes), but it’s easy to imagine Atlanta sneaking in as a wild card with nine or 10 victories. If you’re on board, look for a higher number with a better payout.
