Bubba Watson Long Overdue for Victory in Phoenix

Bubba Watson has done everything but win at the TPC Scottsdale, despite strangely saying in the past that he doesn’t like this golf course at all. In his eyes it isn’t a match made in heaven, but his results say otherwise.

How can a guy who has had such success at this venue dislike it? It’s baffling, but that’s just Bubba being Bubba.

Bubba Watson’s Best Phoenix Open Finishes

Year Result
2015 T-2nd
2014 T-2nd
2019 T-4th
2012 T-5th
2007 T-8th

The mercurial Watson comes in with a solid tournament under his belt, having finished T-6th at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open. That was, however, just his first top-ten finish in his previous seven tournaments so some caution must be taken.

Bubba has made a career of running hot and cold, and when he’s hot, he’s one on the best in the business. At +3300, you’re getting really nice odds, so he’s definitely worth a look this week.

2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open Best Value Picks

  1. Hideki Matsuyama (+1800): Arguably should be the favorite to win given that he pulled off back-to-back victories here in 2016 and 2017. Before last weeks T-45th finish, had a run of six straight events with nothing worse than a T-16th showing including a second and third place result.
  2. Branden Grace (+5000): Showing signs of life after a dismal 2019, with a victory to go along with T-3rd and T-17th placings in last three tourneys. Though he struggled mightily in 2019, did finish runner-up to Fowler at this event last year.
  3. Chez Reavie (+8000): Has come oh-so-close to tasting victory in Phoenix the last two years, losing in a playoff to Gary Woodland in 2018 then following that up with a T-4th showing last year. Will have strong local support, having gone to school at Arizona State University.
  4. J.B. Holmes (+12500): Has been dynamite at this course in the past, picking up victories in 2006 and 2008. Was right in the thick of things at last weeks Farmers Insurance Open before a so-so weekend dropped him into a tie for 16th. Really great deep dive potential given that he’s won twice on this track.
