Midway through the third round of the Shriners Children’s Open, it appeared Sam Burns was going to pull away and set up an opportunity to win in back-to-back weeks. The young American has already won twice in 2021, but he missed a slew of short putts on the back nine to find himself two back heading into Sunday. That opened the door to several other golfers, including Adam Schenk, who has never won before on the PGA Tour. He’s one ahead of Matthew Wolff, who lost a playoff at this tournament last year.

Heading into this unpredictable championship, Burns was among the favorites to claim the trophy, as was Wolff. Not to be discounted is Sungjae Im, who sits just three behind. There are oodles of opportunities to make birdies on this track, so a golfer well back could shoot a blistering final round to overtake everyone.

Sam Burns Poised For Two Straight Wins

With apologies to leader Adam Schenk, the two players who strike the most fear of those challenging to win are Sam Burns and Matthew Wolff. The latter was runner-up at this event a year ago, so he has good vibes on this course. Burns, however, hasn’t even been firing on all cylinders yet is still competing to taste victory yet again.

Last week, he took home the Sanderson Farms Championship despite losing strokes to his competitors on the greens. In the third round this week, he lost nearly a shot to the field on the dance floor, yet he’s still very much in the hunt. What’s keeping him alive is his superb ball striking, as he’s first in strokes gained: tee-to-green through 54 holes, and is tied second in birdies.

He’s got a very similar price as Schenk and Wolff at +330, but I’d trust a player who’s had two wins and two runner-ups in his last twelve tournaments over the leader Schenk, who hasn’t been better than fourth in an event in his career. Wolff hasn’t contended in quite some time, and his game is coming around, but I’d trust the hotter golfer.

2021 Shriners Children’s Open Best Live Value Picks

1. Sungjae Im (+1000): We were high on Sungjae Im before the start of the tournament, so why deviate from that now? He was +2500 pre-event, but that number has dropped to +1000. He’ll begin three behind, but can make birdies in bunches, as he led the tour in that category last year. He’s hit at least 14 greens in all three rounds, and if his putter can even cooperate reasonably well, he has the firepower to take home his second title.
2. Andrew Putnam (+1200): Andrew Putnam begins the final round just two strokes adrift. The 2018 Barracuda Championship winner was 18th in final round scoring average last season and has just three bogeys through three days thus far. He birdied four of his last six holes to get right back into the mix.
