The leaderboard at the US Open is absolutely electric, with three tied at the top, but the golfers behind them are titans of the sport. Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa and Matthew Wolff are all within striking distance of earning the coveted trophy come Sunday evening.
2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, who has had five career runner-ups at majors, is tied at the top along with Russell Henley, who hasn’t had a top-10 in 26 career majors. They’re joined by Mackenzie Hughes, who has just three cuts made in nine career grand slam events. Before the tournament, Rahm was the betting favorite to win his first career major title, and he’s in the mix, just three behind.
Of note, 58 of 60 eventual champions were within four shots of the lead entering the final round, so history is not on the side of those well back of the trio of leaders.

DeChambeau Eyeing Two Straight US Opens
It would be a stroke of dramatic irony should Bryson DeChambeau lift the US Open trophy Sunday evening for the second straight time. The reason being, the last golfer to do was Brooks Koepka, who he has had a simmering rivalry with the last couple of years. After posting a pedestrian 73 on Thursday, he’s had back-to-back solid rounds to find himself just two strokes off the leaders.
With Henley and Hughes not being accustomed to major pressure on Sunday’s, and given Oosthuizen’s perpetual case of finishing runner-up in majors (like he did last month at the PGA Championship), the ‘Mad Scientist’ has to like his chances to overtake them all.

Through three days, DeChambeau ranks third in strokes gained off-the-tee and fifth in putting, which bode well for a strong Sunday. DeChambeau has shot 70 or better in four of his last six major championship final rounds, showing that he’s not afraid to finish strongly. At +500 odds, he appeals more than Oosthuizen and Rory McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major since 2014.
2021 US Open Best Live Value Picks
- Jon Rahm (+1100): The favorite entering this championship is still very much in the conversation, just three shots back. He ranks inside the top-15 in SG: off-the-tee and around the green through three days. Rahm has won at this track before, having shot 65 on the final day in 2017. He’s 15th in final round scoring, having posted a score of 70 or better in seven of his last eight Sunday’s.
- Matthew Wolff (+2700): Like Rahm, last year’s US Open runner-up is also just three shots off the pace. He’s fifth in strokes gained off-the-tee and 15th in putting through 54 holes. If Wolff can avoid mistakes, he’s playing well enough to go low Sunday, as he’s tied for the most birdies this week. He’s a prodigious talent that is capable of popping at any point, and at these odds, presents strong value to get over the finish line.
