One-time PGA Tour winner Keith Mitchell fired a beautiful 5-under, 66 at the Wells Fargo Championship to open up a two shot edge on major champions Rory McIlroy and Gary Woodland. Mitchell had just one of the two bogey-free rounds on moving day as Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina played brutally difficult.

Before the tournament began, we were high on Rory McIlroy as one of the +1700 favorites because he’s won this championship twice in his career. He’s in position to capture his 19th career PGA Tour title against a leaderboard that doesn’t boast a ton of star power challenging leader Keith Mitchell.

Read on to see the updated odds and best bets entering Sunday afternoon’s final round of the prestigious Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy Poised For Third Wells Fargo Title

Even though he came into this tournament on something of a slump by his lofty standards, Rory McIlroy is in prime position to end his winless drought. That has spanned 25 events, as the Ulsterman hasn’t lifted a trophy since the 2019 WGC-HSBC Champions and he’s fallen to his lowest ranking (#15) in the last decade.

There’s just something that brings out the best in McIlroy at Quail Hollow, however, as the only two-time winner of this tournament (he also lost in a playoff). In the last 24 rounds at this track, he’s first in total strokes gained and ball striking. The former world #1 will play in the final group with Keith Mitchell, who has only one PGA Tour victory.

This week McIlroy is fifth in scrambling, sixth in greens in regulation and eight in strokes gained putting. Though his odds aren’t overly enticing now as the +200 favorite compared to +1700 pre-tournament, he still has to be the considerable favorite entering Sunday.

Best Live Value Picks for the Wells Fargo Championship

  1. Viktor Hovland (+1400): The uber talented 23-year-old Norwegian already has two PGA Tour trophies to his credit, and he starts Sunday just T-7th after a 68, tied for the fourth best round Saturday. Made six birdies on moving day and gained over four and a half shots on the field tee-to-green. Both of his wins have come in lesser events and this would mark his first big championship title on a much bigger stage.
  2. Patrick Reed (+1800): Quietly lurking in T-7th position, Patrick Reed has to be feared given that other than Rory McIlroy, he’s the only player with more than five victories inside the top-ten. T-3rd in bogey avoidance this week and he’s fourth in strokes gained putting and sixth in scrambling. Only wins top notch events, and this tournament definitely qualifies as that.
