Best Longshot Bets and Sleeper Picks for 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is up on the PGA Tour’s schedule this week in Detroit, Michigan at the Detroit Golf Club. This week’s field is not as stacked as the first few events back – giving some underdogs a chance to break through.
Bryson DeChambeau is a heavy favorite coming into this week’s tournament in Detroit at +650. However, Nate Lashley won last year’s first-ever Rocket Mortgage as a massive underdog with a total score of 25-under par.
Viktor Hovland was my longshot pick at last week’s Travelers Championship. Hovland was hovering around the top of the leaderboard all week, but couldn’t seal the deal as he would finish tied-11th at 13-under par for the tournament.

Kizzire Could Surprise in Detroit
A longshot by the name of Nate Lashley burst onto the scene last year in Detroit. Patton Kizzire could burst back onto the scene at the Detroit Golf Club.
Kizzire has played well at long drag-strip styled golf courses in the past, and he could very well make a splash in Michigan this week.

Kizzire had a great showing at the Travelers Championship last week. The Auburn grad finished T-6th with three consecutive 66’s and a final round 67. At the Travelers, Kizzire was seventh for Strokes Gained: Approach, 12th Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, and was tied for fifth most birdies made with 23.
Both of Kizzire’s wins have come after a Top 15 finish in his previous tournament. In 2017, Kizzire finished tied-fourth at the Shriner’s Hospital Open for Children at TPC Summerlin and followed that up with a win at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico with a total score of 19-under par.
At the start of the 2018 season, the Georgia native finished T-15th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and won the following week in Hawaii at the Sony Open at 17-under par. Kizzire can make a lot of birdies and the Detroit Golf Club, though long, is a track that can be taken advantage of.

Snedeker on Poa Annua: A Recipe for Success?
Brandt Snedeker had a good showing at last week’s Travelers. The 39-year-old finished 41st, but if it wasn’t for a final round of 70, Snedeker could have easily finished in the Top 20.

Sneds has had success on Donald Ross designed courses in the past, winning the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in 2018 and finishing tied for fifth at this event last year.
Not only does Snedeker play well at Ross designed golf courses, but Poa Annua/Bentgrass mixed golf courses have been his specialty. Snedeker has four of his nine PGA Tour wins on Poa Annua/Bentgrass mix.
After a great showing at the Rocket Mortgage in 2019, the Tennessee native could be in for another strong week. We all know what happens when Snedeker’s putting gets hot and it could very well happen on a type of course he is very familiar with.

Detroit Golf Club Welcomes Great Ball Strikers
Kyle Stanley has always been known as a top ball striker on the PGA Tour. However, his putting has been a different story. Lucky for him the Detroit Golf Club welcomes long and pure hitters.

Since the return of the PGA Tour, Stanley has been hitting the ball great. The Clemson product is fifth in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, 16th Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, and tied-19th Strokes Gained: Total.
Stanley finished 21st at this event last year in Detroit and had a great showing last week at the Travelers. He finished tied-24th but with a final round of 70. His three rounds before that Stanley shot 69-65-65 at a tough TPC River Highlands.
If Stanley can figure out his putting for a few rounds he could easily lock in a Top 20 finish. If Stanley’s putter somehow gets really hot with his elite ball striking, don’t be surprised if he walks away with his third PGA Tour victory.
