In order to have a chance to win this prestigious championship, 16 players will need to advance past the opening three days of round robin play, where they’ll battle each of their group members once head-to-head. DJ Seeks Second Match Play Title

Of all the 16 groupings, Dustin Johnson on paper might have found himself to be in the easiest one, as he faces 30th-ranked golfer in the world Kevin Na, 44th Robert Macintyre and 67th Adam Long, who is only in this tournament because a few players opted not to play.

The #1 player in the world and 2017 winner of this event has cooled off with two middling events following a stretch of 10 in a row inside the top-11, but despite that, he’s head and shoulders above his competition in several strokes gained categories.

Group 1 Strokes Gained Stats In Last 36 PGA Tour Rounds

Golfer Total Tee-to-green Ball Striking Off-the-tee Approach Short Game Around-the-green Putting
Dustin Johnson 1 1 3 18 2 18 8 46
Kevin Na 48 43 58 61 57 31 1 65
Robert Macintyre 64 69 69 63 70 57 49 54
Adam Long 58 63 56 36 63 71 70 64

Kevin Na poses the most serious threat to DJ, though he’s only made it out of the group stage in two of five instances where he’s gone no further than the quarterfinals.

Adam Long has one career PGA Tour title while Robert Macintyre has just one European Tour triumph to his credit and they’re both making their debut in this event. Don’t overthink this one and go with the top player in golf.

Pick: Dustin Johnson (-140)

Jason Day Faces Tough Test

Jason Day is no stranger to success at this golf tournament, having won it in 2014 (at a different venue), and then at Austin Country Club in 2016. He was stellar tee-to-green in his last event at the Players Championship, where he gained over 11 shots on the field, but was done in by an uncharacteristically bad week on the greens.

He comes into this championship having posted four solid tournaments in a row, including a T-7 at Pebble Beach, making him a sleeper to consider to win outright.

It’ll be tough to get past Xander Schauffele, though the X-Man hasn’t made it past the group stage in both of his appearances in this tournament, where he’s won three of six matches. Scottie Scheffler is making his debut in this event, and Andy Sullivan has nothing better than a T-62 in his last seven PGA Tour events, dating back to 2018.

In several strokes gained categories, this group has been virtually identical in almost all stats, with the exception of Sullivan who has struggled. Going with a two-time winner with a little more value in his +230 odds is very enticing.

Pick: Jason Day (+230)

Paul Casey Has Been On A Tear

Paul Casey has been playing world-class golf in 2021, winning the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic and hasn’t finished worse than T-12 in six starts. His most recent outing was a T-5 at the Players Championship.

In his last 12 rounds, Casey is second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained and seventh tee-to-green. He also loves this format, having made it out of the group stage in two of the last three tries, where he amassed an exceptional 7-1-1 record.

The 43-year-old has also won the 2006 HSBC World Match Play and twice was a runner-up at this championship in 2009 and 2010, at a different venue.

Paul Casey 2021 Results

Tournament Result
The Players Championship T-5
Arnold Palmer Invitational T-10
AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am T-5
Saudi International T-12
Omega Dubai Desert Classic WIN
The American Express T-8

His closest challenger is Webb Simpson, but surprisingly he hasn’t found success at all, failing to advance to the sweet 16 in all four attempts. Talor Gooch has been alternating good starts with average ones and Mackenzie Hughes has been T-32 or worse in seven of his last eight starts. Both are making their tournament debuts.

Casey is playing extremely well and is up against an inexperienced and ineffective group, making him a great selection.

Pick: Paul Casey (+145)
