Women’s Olympic Golf Tournament Odds and Picks

After a very exciting Olympic Men’s Golf competition that saw American Xander Schauffele win gold with a clutch par on the 72nd hole, the women take center stage. Fellow American Nelly Korda, who won the Women’s PGA Championship in June is the betting favorite to earn gold over Inbee Park and Jin Young Ko.

Four Americans will compete in total for the 60-woman field, along with four players from South Korea. That’s the maximum amount any country competing can send. Nelly Korda is joined by her sister Jessica, along with Lexi Thompson and Danielle Kang. Park and Ko will have teammates Sei Young Kim and Hyo-Joo Kim with them as well.

It is the same course that the men played, which is Kasumigaseki Country Club (East Course), a par-71 layout. It’ll play about 800 yards shorter. The format is the same as it is most weeks on the LPGA Tour, with 72-hole, stroke play being used. Americans were left off the podium in the 2016 Rio Olympics, as Inbee Park won gold, Lydia Ko (New Zealand) grabbed silver and Shanshan Feng (China) received bronze.

Danielle Kang Playing Great Golf

Considered America’s second best chance at earning gold at +1300 odds is Danielle Kang. The fifth ranked golfer in the world has been playing very good golf, posting top-25 results in six of her last seven times teeing it up. Included in that have been three top-5 showings as she’s been knocking on the door in 2021 after posting two wins last year.

Kang is first in putting average and ninth in scoring average on the season, so she can make birdies in bunches when she gets hot with the flat stick. With her odds double that of tournament favorite Nelly Korda, Kang pretends more palatable value than taking on a player with such low +650 odds.

1. Brooke Henderson (CAN) (+1800): The 23-year-old Canadian has already racked up ten wins in her career, including the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship. The eighth ranked golfer in the world has a victory on the campaign and is third in greens in regulation and sixth in distance. In her first Olympics five years ago, she had a strong T-7 showing.
2. Hannah Green (AUS) (+2500): Like Brooke Henderson, Hannah Green has a Women’s PGA Championship title to her credit (2019). She’s had three really strong finishes this season, placing second at the HSBC Women’s World Championship and has a pair of T-3rd’s, including just three starts ago. She’s first in putts per green in regulation this year and is eighth in scoring average.
3. Minjee Lee (AUS) (+2800): The seventh ranked golfer Minjee Lee is coming off her first major triumph in her last event, the Amundi Evian Championship after weekend rounds of 65-64 before a playoff victory. That was her fourth top-5 of the campaign, which she also had the week before tasting major glory. She’s no stranger to the winner’s circle, having posted six in her career, along with six top-10’s in major tournaments. Like Henderson, also had a T-7 at the last Olympics in Rio.
