The recent controversy surrounding the Kentucky Derby will be debated for generations. However, it is time to move on. Neither Maximum Security or County House is running in the Preakness Stakes, but a large field is, and that creates betting opportunities.

Thanks to sportsbooks, you can now size up how quickly the race will be run, the winning margin, and obviously, whether there will be an inquiry. Let’s look at our options. And don’t forget to check out the latest Preakness Stakes odds at our tracker right up until race time.

Preakness Stakes Margin of Victory Odds

Margin of Victory Odds
Over 1.5 Lengths -130
Under 1.5 Lengths -110

*All odds taken 05/15/19

During the past 10 runnings of the Preakness the final margin has been 1.5 lengths or less seven times. Only twice has the margin been more than one and three quarter lengths.

This year, with Maximum Security and Country House not running, there is not going to be a huge favorite. In a race that is considered pretty open, the chances for a tight result increase.

Pick: Under 1.5 Lengths (-110)

Will Secretariat’s Record Time Be Broken?

Will the Preakness Winner Break Secretariat’s Record of 1:53:00? Odds
Yes +2000
No -5000

Since 1925 they have been running the Preakness at a distance of a mile and three sixteenths. In horse racing one-fifth of a second is equivalent to a full length. Two horses have run 1:53:40, or essentially two lengths worse than Secretariat, and neither took place in the last 20 years.

A +2000 price indicates almost a 5% chance of a record being set. At +2000 you are saying it is better than a 98% shot that no new mark will be set, which is the side you want to be on.

Pick: No (-5000)

Preakness Stakes Winning Time Odds

Will the Winning Time at the Preakness Stakes Be Faster or Slower than 1:56:00? Odds
Over 1:56:00 -150
Under 1:56:00 +110

While the margins have been really tight, recently the Preakness has been run just under 1:56:00. Last year Justify beat the number by .07 seconds and two years ago Cloud Computing ran 1:55:98. The previous two years the number was over 1:58. Of the prior 20 runnings, 16 were under 1:56:00.

Pick: Under 1:56.00 (+110)

Where Will the Preakness Winner Have Raced at the Kentucky Derby?

Will the Preakness Stakes Winner Have Raced in the Kentucky Derby? Odds
Yes +100
No -140

It is likely that Improbable and War of Will, two horses who took part in the Kentucky Derby, will be the favorites on Saturday. If they go off at 2/1 and 3/1, that equals a combined implied probability of around 58%. While most of the other contenders did not run in Louisville, the chances of Improbable or War of Will earning the Black Eyed Susans makes yes the right bet.

Pick: Yes (+100)

What Letter Will the Preakness Winner’s Name Start With?

Will the Winner’s Name Start with a Vowel or Consonant? Odds
Vowel -150
Consonant +110

Improbable is likely to be the favorite, and Alwaysmining, Owendale, and Anothertwistafate will be among second tier options. The vowel group is stronger than primarily War of Will, Bourbon War, Win Win Win, and Signalman.

Pick: Vowel (-150)

Will There Be an Inquiry?

Will the Preakness Stakes Have an Inquiry? Odds
Yes +500
No -1000

What is supposed to be a fun prop, is actually a lot more involved. There technically was no inquiry at the Kentucky Derby, since stewards did not review the result until a jockey objection was launched. An inquiry also does not require that the order of finish is changed, just that they take a extra close look at the running to make sure it was clean.

There technically was no inquiry at the Kentucky Derby, since stewards did not review the result until a jockey objection was launched.

That said, inquiry’s do not get posted once a day or in one out of nine or 10 races, and this valuation indicates there is around a 17% chance of an inquiry.

Pick: No (-1000)
