The visiting Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros will try to retain some momentum when they meet at 8:10 p.m. ET at Minute Maid Park in the opener of a four-game series.

Angels manager Joe Maddon has not named a starting pitcher but said left-hander Jose Suarez, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, will “factor” into the game. The Astros will go with rookie Luis Garcia (0-3, 3.28).

Los Angeles (15-18) took two of three games from the Los Angeles Dodger over the weekend after losing five in a row. Houston (18-16) has won three of its last four games.

A Start for Suarez?

Regardless of how he is used Monday, Suarez will be making his season debut for the Angels. He also did not appear in any games for Salt Lake, which begin its season last Tuesday.

Suarez made his MLB debut in 2019 and has had little success. His record is 2-8 and he has a 7.99 ERA in 21 games, including 17 starts, over two seasons.

His career did start off on the right foot.

In the pandemic-shortened season of 2020, Suarez made two starts and both were disasters. He allowed five runs in each, lasting 1.1 innings in one and one inning in the other.

Suarez has an 0-2 career record against the Astros with a 7.31 ERA in five games, including four starts. He has made three starts and one relief appearance at Minute Maid Park, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA.

Suarez has done little to inspire fan confidence.

Regardless of whether he is the starter or the bulk pitcher following an opener, the Angels will need Suarez to provide length. Maddon was forced to use his bullpen a total of 10.2 innings in the last two games.

Astros Career Stats vs Suarez

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
Jose Altuve 9 5 1 3 0 .556
Michael Brantley 6 1 0 0 3 .167
Alex Bregman 7 1 0 0 3 .143
Yordan Alvarez 5 1 0 0 2 .200
Yuli Gurriel 7 2 0 0 0 .286
Carlos Correa 1 1 0 0 0 1.000
Kyle Tucker 0 0 0 0 0
Myles Straw 2 0 0 0 1 .000
Martin Maldonado 0 0 0 0 0

Shortstop Carlos Correa, who is in a 1-for-27 slump, is expected to be back in the lineup after being rested Monday for the Astros, who have scored at least seven runs in three of their last four games.

Garcia Looks for First Win

Garcia will be making his third consecutive start for the Astros after bouncing between the rotation and bullpen to begin the season.

In four starts in 2021, Garcia is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA. He has allowed only one run in six innings in two relief appearances for a 1.50 ERA.

Garcia lasted 4.2 innings and did not factor in the decision in his last start last Wednesday against the Yankees in New York. He allowed two runs on three with a career-high eight strikeouts and two walks. His 92 pitches were the most of his two-year career.

Garcia had a little problem with Giancarlo Stanton at Yankee Stadium.

Garcia is still looking for his first career win following 11 games and five starts, though the 24-year-old’s ERA is a fine 3.16.

In three career games, including one start, Garcia is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA against the Angels.

Garcia has pitched to a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings at Minute Maid Park this season compared to 4.61 in 13.2 innings on the road.

Angels Career Stats vs Garcia

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
David Fletcher 3 0 0 0 0 .000
Shohei Ohtani 2 1 1 1 0 .500
Mike Trout 1 1 1 1 0 1.000
Jared Walsh 3 1 1 2 0 .333
Justin Upton 3 1 0 0 0 .333
Jose Rojas 1 1 0 0 0 1.000
Taylor Ward 1 0 0 0 0 .000
Phil Gosselin 0 0 0 0 0
Kurt Suzuki 0 0 0 0 0

Angels shortstop Jose Iglesias is expected to miss his second straight game because of lower back tightness. On Sunday, second baseman David Fletcher played shortstop, third baseman Jose Rojas shifted to second base and Phil Gosselin started at third.

It has been feast or famine for Los Angeles’ offense lately. In the last eight games, the Angels have scored 11 runs once, nine times another time and three runs or less in the other six games.

Sunday Success

Jared Walsh hit a two-run double in the third inning and the Angels held off the Dodgers 2-1.

After the Dodgers struck first in the top of the third on Chris Taylor’s two-out RBI single, the Angels responded in the bottom half when Walsh lined a bases-loaded, ground-rule double off Trevor Bauer.

Kyle Tucker hit a three-run homer and tied a career high with four RBIs as the Astros built a big early lead and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 in Houston.

Jose Altuve added a solo homer for the Astros to help them win two of three in the series. Tucker’s homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning that extended the lead to 7-0.

The Astros have won four of six meeting with the Angels this season. The Angels won the season series last year for the first time since 2014, going 6-4.

Look for the Astros to win this, as much because of their ability to score off Suarez than Garcia holding down the Angels.

The Pick: Astros (-142)
