  • Minnesota’s odds will move inside of 10/1 if they make big acquisitions at the trade deadline

The Minnesota Twins have been one of baseball’s biggest surprises this season. With an elite offense, they might be the team that makes a splash at the trade deadline to pick up the pitching they need to be a true contender. Their odds to win the World Series are currently at +1400 but expect them to be shorter after the trade deadline passes.

New York Yankees +350
Houston Astros +450
Atlanta Braves +1400
Minnesota Twins +1400

Twins Are in on Thor

It looks like the Minnesota Twins are one of the teams in the running for New York Mets starter, Noah Syndergaard. The Mets have made it pretty clear that he’s available and while a number of teams are in the running, few have the assets.

There’s the New York Yankees, who the Mets likely don’t want to deal with and they don’t have great assets. There’s the Atlanta Braves, who have the assets but are also in the same division, so that’s a turnoff. There’s the San Diego Padres but will they want to trade a lot in a season where they’re not a contender?

The Twins make sense because they have top prospects Royce Lewis and Alex Kiriloff. And it just so happens that both play positions (shortstop and outfield) where the team has plenty of depth, so it’s not going to be a problem in the near term. They have what it takes to make this move and it will be a gamechanger.

Syndergaard Would Give Twins Credibility

Sure, Thor isn’t having that great of a season. He’s 7-5 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. However, it feels like he’s just going through the motions and needs a change in scenery. We saw how well that worked with Gerrit Cole and the Houston Astros, and this is about the same situation.

The Twins are also a frugal team, so they don’t want just a rental. The good news is that Thor is under team control through 2021, so that’s a huge positive.

The Twins have Jose Berrios at the top of their rotation and pairing him with Syndergaard gives this team a really strong one-two punch for a playoff series. Michael Pineda, Martin Perez and Kyle Gibson are having respectable seasons but they don’t strike fear into any opponent. This move would make the Twins a serious World Series threat.

Twins are Currently at +1400

The Twins offense became the fastest unit to ever hit 200 home runs on Friday night. It’s fairly clear that this side of the team doesn’t need much help. However, if they do manage to pick up Syndergaard as well as reliever Sergio Romo, who the team is also to be rumored to be after, they’ll be a problem in the American League.

They’re currently at +1400 right now to win the World Series but if they swing for the fences and go all-in to get Syndergaard, they’re going to be inside of 10/1 after the trade deadline.
