Cardinals vs Pirates Probable Pitchers

Matz will be looking to improve upon a rough start to the season, going 3-3 with a 6.03 ERA in 37.1 innings of work. He has struck out 44 hitters and allowed only eight walks, but the southpaw is getting hit around pretty badly. Matz did pitch well in his last outing though against his former team the Mets, tossing five frames of two-run baseball. He only surrendered three hits as well.

However, the last time Matz faced the Pirates, he was absolutely clobbered. They tagged him for seven earned runs in only three innings back on April 10th. Hopefully, it’s a different story for Matz this time around.

Matz vs Wilson

Steven Matz
VS
Bryse Wilson
3-3 Record 0-2
6.03 ERA 5.67
1.39 WHIP 1.59
.284 OBA .350

Wilson isn’t exactly enjoying the best season for Pittsburgh. He’s 0-2 with a 5.67 ERA and opponents are tattooing him, batting .350. The 24-year-old is especially getting hit around with the fastball, which he’s struggled to locate.

His last start wasn’t awful, going 5.1 innings against the Cubs and allowing eight hits and three earned. Wilson already faced the Cards earlier in the year as well but it didn’t end great, being chased after four frames of three-run baseball.

St Louis Cardinals Betting Outlook

It hasn’t been a great year for the Cards so far sitting just above .500. But, their bats are really thriving. They rank third in the Majors with a .250 average and sit within the top ten in almost every major offensive category.

Nolan Arenado is enjoying a fantastic season, batting .297 nine homers and a slugging percentage well over .500. The third basemen is also second in NL MVP odds at +650. This lineup as a whole is slashing .319 off Wilson, which is a great sign heading into Sunday’s rubber match.

Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Outlook

Not much is going right for Pittsburgh in 2022. They’ve been brutal on both sides of the ball and can’t seem to find any consistency. The Pirates are hitting .224 as a team (27th) and their staff owns a dismal 4.69 ERA, which is 27th in the MLB.

But, they should have some confidence for Sunday’s game. The lineup is batting .344 off Matz. Michael Chavis is a blistering 4 for 7 against the lefty, while Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds also swinging it well vs. Matz.

Cardinals vs Pirates Pick

I really like how Matz pitched in his previous start. Although the Pirates did hit him around last time, I believe you’ll see him come out and keep his ballclub in this game. The bats will keep rolling as well vs. Wilson, who is very hittable. Take St. Louis to cover.

Pick: Cardinals -1.5 (-105)
