A potential NLCS preview concludes on Wednesday as the Braves host the Dodgers. The 2021 and 2020 champs currently boast the two shortest price tags in the World Series odds, and are the only two NL teams with a winning percentage north of .600.
Online sportsbooks are projecting a high scoring game in the MLB odds, with a slight nod to Atlanta on the moneyline.

Los Angeles vs Atlanta Probable Pitchers
The Braves will give the ball to Bryce Elder, who’s been phenomenal in his sophomore campaign. The 24-year-old has yielded two runs or less in four straight outings, and in seven of nine starts in 2023.
He currently boasts a 1.93 ERA this month, while opponents are slashing a measly .233/.299/.352 against him for the season. Elder has never faced the Dodgers in his brief two-year career, but is in for a stiff challenge versus the National League’s top scoring lineup – more on them later.
Gonsolin vs Elder Stats
2-1 | Record | 3-0 |
1.13 | ERA | 2.06 |
0.92 | WHIP | 1.15 |
.153 | OBA | .233 |
2.1 | SO/W Ratio | 2.4 |
The Dodgers will counter with Tony Gonsolin, whose form is eerily similar to a year ago. In 2022, Gonsolin held opponents to two earned runs or less in 21 of 24 starts. So far this season, he’s accomplished the feat in all but one of his five starts, and is fresh off back-to-back shut out performances.
Tony Gonsolin today: 5 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 3 Ks, 0 R
Tony Gonsolin's last 3 starts: 16 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 15 Ks, 0 ER— Dodger Insider (@DodgerInsider) May 20, 2023
Last time out, he blanked the Cardinals over 5 innings, scattering only a single hit. His previous start yielded only two hits over another 5 scoreless innings versus the Padres.
The Braves boast the second highest scoring MLB starting lineup from the National League, but they were equally strong last season and Gonsolin had no trouble keep them in check. In two starts versus Atlanta in 2022, he posted a minuscule 0.77 ERA and a .158 opponent batting average.
Dodgers vs Braves Prediction
The meat of the Atlanta lineup has been some of their worst performers versus Gonsolin. Ronald Acuna Jr, the favorite in the NL MVP odds, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and Eddie Rosario are a combined 5-for-23, with just two extra-base hits.
To make matters worse, the Braves have performed significantly worse versus righties like Gonsolin, compared to lefties. They’re slashing .236/.319/.412 versus right-handed pitching, as opposed to .309/.371/.574 against southpaws. Atlanta’s home run rate is an absurd 6.7% versus left-handers, dipping to just 4.1% against righties.
Dodgers vs Braves 2023 H2H Results
Date | Away Team | Home Team | Result |
---|---|---|---|
May 23 | Dodgers | Braves | LAD, 8-1 |
May 22 | Dodgers | Braves | LAD, 8-6 |
Gonsolin isn’t typically a big strikeout producer, but a matchup with Atlanta could change that. The Braves have a 26.3% strikeout rate versus right-handed pitching, while Gonsolin has struck out at least six batters in two of his past three starts, and fanned eight Atlanta hitters last year over 11.2 innings.
As for the Dodgers bats, they haven’t been silenced in quite some time. LA has scored at least five runs in seven straight games, averaging over six runs per contest during that stretch. The Dodgers lineup is littered with NL MVP candidates, including former Braves star Freddie Freeman.
FREDDIE FREEMAN WELCOME BACK TO ATLANTA
— Blake Harris (@BlakeHHarris) May 23, 2023
The 33-year-old boasts a top-four average in MLB and a top-seven OPS, and has been absolutely raking this month. Freeman is slashing .378/.430/.732 in May, with a 1.162 OPS. He’s posted nine multi-hit games in his past 12 starts, pounding three hits and a home run on Monday against his former team.
Freeman has been torturing MLB pitchers all season, but right-handers like Elder have been taking the most abuse. Freeman is hitting .359 versus righties so far, which is .93 points better than his average against lefties.
