The National League West-leading Dodgers (20-8, 10-6 road) are 7-1 in their last eight games. A win Wednesday would give the Dodgers their fourth straight series triumph.

The Pirates (12-17, 6-8 home) have lost nine of their last 12 games. Pittsburgh hasn’t won back-to-back games since April 21-22.

Los Angeles is favored in the World Series odds at +475. The Pirates are a distant longshot in World Series futures at +40000. LA is also the chalk in the NL pennant odds at +225 and are prohibitive -250 odds-on favorites in the NL West odds.

Uncertain Starting Pitching

Southpaw Dillion Peters will make his 10th appearance of the season for the Pirates but just his third start. He’ll work as a opener. Already with three wins, Peters is one shy of his career high set in 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels.

He’s made one career start against the Dodgers. Peters didn’t figure in the decision. He worked a solid 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run and four hits. He struck out four against two walks.

Peters is 3-2 with a 2.10 ERA in eight career appearances at PNC Park, five of which have been starts. He shows a 1.16 WHIP and 1.82 strikeout/walk ratio in 25.2 innings. He’s limited opposing hitters to a .202 batting average there.

The Dodgers are activating 24-year-old righty Ryan Pepiot from the taxi squad to make his MLB debut. With the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers, Pepiot is 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in six starts. He’s struck out 36 in 26.1 innings of work against only 12 walk for a strikeouts/walks ratio of 3.00.

As well, he has a 1.15 WHIP and is allowing just 6.15 hits per nine innings. Pepiot was added to the Dodgers’ taxi squad on Monday, with the expectation that he would be activated to make this start.

Pepiot was named PCL Pitcher of the Month during April. He attended spring training with the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee.

The Dodgers have hit Peters hard in their small sample size of plate appearances against him. Trea Turner is batting .667 (2-for-3) with two RBI. Mookie Betts is 2-for-5 (.400).

Austin Barnes is 1-for-2 (.500) and both Hanser Alberto  and Freddie Freeman are 1-for-3 (.333).

Dodgers vs Pirates Prediction

That the Pirates were able to score a five spot against the Dodgers in the opener of this three-game set is actually quite an impressive feat. Over the past seven games, LA has two or fewer runs in six of those games and one run or less on five occasions in that span.

In fact, it’s the only time over the past eight Dodgers-Pirates games that Pittsburgh has put more than three baserunners across the plate. The Bucs are averaging two runs per game during that eight-game stretch. Pittsburgh has given up five or more runs four times in the past six games.

With an MLB-debutant taking the hill for LA, it might be tempting to make a play on the Pirates in this game. It would be if it weren’t for the fact that the Pittsburgh starting rotation is in such disarray. The Bucs have gained one win from a starting pitcher all season long.

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers ML (-175)
