The Giants and Cardinals will wrap up a three-game set on Sunday night under the prime time lights. The two teams have split the weekend series so far, with San Francisco taking the opener 8-2 before St. Louis bounced back on Saturday with a 4-0 victory.

This will make the seventh and final matchup between these two clubs this season, with each having won three times so far.

San Francisco opened as -150 moneyline favorites, in a contest that features a total of 7 runs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08pm ET at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, MO, with clear skies and 73-degree nighttime temperatures in the forecast.

San Francisco vs St. Louis Probable Pitchers

One of the main reasons the total for this contest is so low is due to the presence of Cy Young odds contender Carlos Rodon on the Giants mound. Rodon currently has the third shortest odds to win the award, after beginning the season in spectacular form.

The left-hander has yet to allow more than two runs in any start, and has not surrendered a home run. He’s fresh off a 12 strikeout performance versus the Rockies, and has yielded only seven runs total over 35 innings.

He’s 1-2 lifetime versus the Cardinals, but has had exceptional success against the active hitters on St. Louis’ roster. Current Cardinal batters have managed only four hits in 31 career at-bats, posting a minuscule .268 slugging percentage and .485 OPS.

Rodon vs Wainwright

Carlos Rodon
VS
Adam Wainwright
4-1 Record 3-3
1.80 ERA 3.18
0.91 WHIP 1.29
.165 OBA .246
4.4 SO/W Ratio 2.2

St. Louis will counter with Adam Wainwright, who’s fresh off a stint on the COVID list. The 40-year-old last started a game 11 days ago, and was brilliant in a 7 inning, one hit performance versus Kansas City.

The wily veteran continues to put up strong numbers even at his advanced age, posting a very respectable 3.18 ERA and .357 opponent slugging percentage.

He’s 8-8 all-time against the Giants in 17 career starts, while the one batter on the San Fran roster (Mike Yastrzemski) has a career batting average north of .250 versus him.

Giants vs Cardinals Betting Analysis

San Fran’s numbers may not be great against Wainwright, but it’s impossible to ignore how well they’ve swung the bats over the past seven games, Saturday notwithstanding.

They’ve outscored their opponents 49-24 during that stretch, crossing the plate at least seven times on five different occasions. Only the Dodgers score more runs per game, while the Giants are slugging .414 with an .800 OPS over the past week.

The Cardinals meanwhile, have been underperforming offensively given the level of talent in their lineup. They’ve scored four or fewer runs in five of their past six games, and in four of six contests against San Fran this season.

Giants vs Cardinals Pick

One factor working in St. Louis’ favor for tonight however, is their significantly stronger splits versus lefties than righties.

The Cardinals are slugging .464 with an .801 OPS against southpaws this season, compared to a .360 slugging percentage and .665 OPS versus righties. NL MVP odds longshots Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Tyler O’Neill all hit from the right side of the plate, and there’s a strong chance St. Louis trots out a lineup of seven or eight right-handed batters to face the lefty Rodon.

The Cardinals lineup is too potent to continue to underwhelm while fading the Giants’ red-hot hitters doesn’t seem wise even with a crafty vet like Wainwright on the mound.

Don’t expect a shootout, but these two clubs can definitely exceed seven runs, much like they have three times already this season.

Pick: Over 7 (-110)
