Fresh off a confrontation with Yadier Molina and the Cardinals yesterday, reigning NL Manager of the Year Torey Lovullo brings his piping hot Arizona Diamondbacks to the Bay Area tonight (10:15 PM ET, Monday, April 9) to face the new-look San Francisco Giants. Zack Godley gets the call for Arizona against San Francisco’s Derek Holland.

The 7-2 Diamondbacks opened as slight road favorites with Godley on the bump. He was near-perfect in his first start this year, going seven strong against the Dodgers, giving up just four hits and one run on 96 pitches in a 6-1 win. That carried over from the quantum leap he made last year – his first as a full-time starter – when he lowered his ERA from 6.39 to 3.37 and his WHIP from 1.49 to 1.14.

Godley’s counterpart, Holland, is hoping to rebound from a rough first outing, when he was touched up for five runs (three earned) in just five innings of work by those same Dodgers. Control issues continued to plague the 31-year-old, who walked three of the 21 batters he faced in a 5-0 loss. He finished last year with the fifth-most walks in the majors (75).

Arizona’s 4-1 win over St. Louis yesterday came with a side of fireworks as Lovullo got into it, first, with the home-plate umpire, and next with Cardinals catcher Yadi Molina.

There was nothing explosive about the Giants’ 2-1 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday, except Clayton Kershaw’s curveball maybe.

DIAMONDBACKS 6
GIANTS 4

The Diamondbacks are not going to keep up this pace all season, but they bring the more potent lineup, have a ton of momentum, and are sending a higher quality starter to the hill. The way the D-Backs hitters have dominated Holland in the past (.429 BA) coupled with Godley’s ungodly numbers against San Fran’s order makes Arizona the play.
