It’s a tasty finish to Opening Day in Major League Baseball in the Pacific Northwest, as the Seattle Mariners host the Cleveland Guardians.
The pitching matchup features 2020 American League Cy Young winner Shane Bieber going up against Seattle’s Luis Castillo, the two men hovering as frisky picks in the 2023 Cy Young odds.
There’s also serious star power, with young Mariners’ stud Julio Rodriguez, a top-4 favorite in the 2023 MVP odds, closely followed by Cleveland’s all-world talent Jose Ramirez.
Any or all of them could feature prominently in your Guardians vs Mariners Opening Day player and pitching props. Let’s look more closely at the odds and share some of our favorite picks.

Guardians vs Mariners Prop #1: Castillo Strikeouts
This one is a great matchup between a prolific strikeout pitcher and a lineup that loves to put bat on ball.
The Mariners’ ace up 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings after being dealt from the Cincinnati Reds to the Mariners in 2022. In an August 27th game against Cleveland last year, he rung up 10 Guardians in six inning of work, albeit in a 4-3 loss.

His next start was against the Guardians on September 2. While the M’s won 6-1, Castillo punched out only four batters.
Cleveland only struck out 7.1 times per game last season, tops in MLB.
As a team, they have struck out 25 times in 99 at-bats vs Castillo, with Steven Kwan the only player to have a just a single strikeout against Castilo. That’s not quite a strikeout per inning, but should be enough to land you a win.
Pick: Castillo Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-110), 1 unit
Guardians vs Mariners Prop #2: Julio Rodriguez Hits
Not surprisingly, Rodriguez’s hit total in April was the lowest in any month. After recording just 15 hits and batting .205 in his first month as a rook, J-Rod took off, posting back-to-back 30+ hit months, and dipping below 20 hits in a month just once the rest of the way.
He did have his problems vs Bieber, albeit in a very small sample size, going hitless in three at-bats, striking out twice.

Rodriguez had a great spring, hitting .444, with 16 hits in 36 at-bats and a 1.237 OPS, and while that doesn’t always translate into immediate regular-season success, it does show he’s ready.
Breaking the goose egg with one hit doesn’t offer much value, but a couple of hits? We’ll take that gamble, even against Bieber.
Pick: Rodriguez 2+ Hits (+240), 1 unit

Guardians vs Mariners Prop #3: Jose Ramirez Home Run
The second baseman does have an opening-day dinger under his belt from the 2017 season against the Texas Rangers.
Entering his 11th season in the Bigs, he’s only faced the Mariners one other time on Opening Day, in 2018, and went 0-for-4 in a 2-1 loss in Seattle.
If there is someone that could get to Castillo, though, it’s Ramirez, who is a career 5-for-18 vs the righty, but he’s taken him deep three times — Amed Rosario is the only other Guardian to have taken Castillo yard.
If you’ve got a little extra to spare, this is definitely worth a sprinkle.
Pick: Ramirez 1+ Home Run (+390), 0.5 units
