A pair of NL divisional matchups with potential postseason implications highlight this weekend’s MLB schedule. The Chicago Cubs look to maintain their hold on first place in the NL Central as they visit the Milwaukee Brewers, while the resurgent Philadelphia Phillies look to make gains on the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves

Cubs Visit Milwaukee in Clash of Struggling NL Central Rivals

The Chicago Cubs will try to maintain their tenuous grasp on first place in the NL Central standings when they open a three-game road series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night. The Cubs continue a nine-game road trip in Milwaukee after posting a 4-1 victory in Wednesday’s series final against the San Francisco Giants to put the brakes on a three-game losing streak.

The Cubs’ mini swoon leaves them deadlocked with the surging St. Louis Cardinals in the divisional standings, and just two games up on the third-place Brewers. Chicago is now urgently in need of a turnaround on the road, where they are 7-18 over their past 25 contests.

The Cubs have also struggled to produce consistent results against the Brewers, going 3-3 in six meetings this season, and 3-6 in their past nine contests at Miller Park.

Cubs vs Brewers Probable Starting Pitchers

The Brewers are also looking to bounce back after dropping two of three to the visiting Cincinnati Reds this week, but escaped with a 5-4 win in Wednesday’s series finale. Milwaukee have shown steady improvement during its current 6-3 run which comes on the heels of a horrific 10-19 run that bounced them from their early-season perch atop the division.

Milwaukee has scored 7.33 runs per game during its recent surge, but surrendering big run totals remains a concern for the club after giving up 10 or more runs twice over their past six outings. However, the Brewers remain one of the most reliable home clubs in the majors despite this week’s struggles against, going 13-10 over their past 23 to lift their home record to 31-23, second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL.

Atlanta Braves vs Philadelphia Phillies Series Prices

Phillies Aim to Close Gap on NL East-Leading Braves

The Philadelphia Phillies aim to continue their climb back into postseason contention on Friday, when they open a three-game series against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. Pegged as a pre-season favorite to claim the division title, the Phillies have been a disappointment through the first half of the season, but have shown signs of playoff form during 7-3 run that has lifted them to just 5.5 games back of the Braves in the divisional standings.

After riding a 4-7 run into July, the Phillies have held their own against stiff competition, kicking off their current 10-game surge with a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals and splitting a four-game set with the Dodgers before feasting on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers this past week. Philadelphia has powered its surge with stingy baseball, surrendering just nine total runs over their past five outings, and has also posted five straight wins over Atlanta on home turf.

Braves vs Phillies Probable Starting Pitchers

Conversely, the Braves arrive in Philadelphia mired in their worst slump since mid-April. The club has lost six of eight, and was swept at home in a two-game series with lowly Kansas City Royals earlier this week, scoring just four total runs in the series, and just 3.38 runs per game during their eight-game slide.

While that has created a boon for sports bettors taking the Under in totals betting when the Braves play, it is a major concern for the club against the Phillies, who have averaged almost six runs per game during their five-game home win streak against Atlanta.

However, the Braves are set to send the fearsome duo of Mike Soroka and Max Fried to the mound this weekend, along with Kevin Gausman, who has allowed just five total earned runs over 11.1 innings in his past two starts against Philadelphia.
