The Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners play their third game of the season on Thursday, April, 17th. Starting at 2:10pm ET, it’s Logan Gilbert on the mound for the Mariners facing Jimmy Lambert of the White Sox, who have seen their rotation hit hard by injuries.
This series has been a close call with oddsmakers, and we again see only a small gap between their respective moneyline prices. They are two franchises with high hopes for 2022, though Chicago is favored in MLB Division odds while the Mariners are outsiders in the American League West.
Mariners vs White Sox Odds
Team | Runline | Moneyline | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Seattle Mariners | -1.5 (+150) | -106 | O 9.0 (-120) |
Chicago White Sox | +1.5 (-190) | -113 | U 9.0 (+102) |
Odds as of Barstool Sportsbook.
The season series was split 3-3 last year, with Chicago finishing the campaign just three wins ahead of the Mariners. The South Siders have the bigger names across the roster, but these teams are not miles apart right now, particularly with Lance Lynn, AJ Pollock, and Lucas Giolito on the injured list.
Probable Starters
Coming off 24 starts in 2021, Logan Gilbert pitched five innings of one-run ball in his 2022 season debut, striking out seven. Gilbert was a little unlucky according to his expected ERA last season. He ranked solidly in the majority of advanced categories, and has exhibited good control throughout his Major League career. That should be particularly valuable against a White Sox team which ranked fourth in walks in 2021.
Congrats to Jimmy Lambert & Anderson Severino on their promotions to the @whitesox today!

While a one-outing sample doesn’t tell us a great deal, Gilbert enjoyed success in his two innings against the White Sox last season, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Jimmy Lambert is making just his fourth start in the big leagues. Ranked as Chicago’s 16th prospect by MLB Pipeline, Lambert struggled across his 15 innings in the Majors last season, and only posted a 4.76 ERA across 64.1 AAA innings. He did, however, strikeout 11.5 per nine.
Gilbert vs Lambert Pitching Stats
5-6 | Record | 1-1 |
4.68 | ERA | 6.23 |
4.09 | xERA | 8.16 |
25.4% | K% | 17.6% |
With a tendency to give up the free pass, Lambert’s stuff must be at its sharpest if he’s to keep the Mariners’ offense quiet. His lone outing of the season was giving up one run over three frames in AAA.

Seattle’s Slow Offensive Start
There’s more uncertainty with Lambert than Gilbert, but there’s greater doubt about the Seattle offense. Only three hitters have homered so far going into Wednesday’s game, and their youthful outfield pair of Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic have been ice-cold.

This is a team which had an OPS+ of just 92 last season despite reaching 90 wins. The additions of Jesse Winker and Adam Frazier in particular were meant to help out in that department, and there was hope of a bounce-back year from Eugenio Suarez.

It’s too early to draw any conclusions about those moves, of course, but this matchup with Lambert is a good opportunity for the Mariners offense to find its rhythm.
Mariners vs White Sox Prediction
There’s enough talent on the White Sox to take a game against any pitcher, but Seattle on the moneyline is the value bet here. There’s considerable evidence of Gilbert as a solid starter in the Majors, while there’s a question mark over Lambert.
From His last start from 2021 to his start yesterday. Logan Gilbert has tightened up his release point so all 4 pitches are basically from the same arm slot, hopefully helping his control and batter deceit. pic.twitter.com/1JzarF3Xdn

The bigger concern with the Mariners is the bullpen thus far. Perhaps it’s worth considering a bet on Seattle to be winning after five as insurance against a blown lead, though they should have some margin for error if the Seattle offense can put up a few runs against Lambert.
Pick: Seattle Moneyline (-106)
