The Miami Marlins — losers of three of their last four games — will try to salvage their three-game series with the Washington Nationals Sunday in the nation’s capital (1:05 pm ET).

Rookie Trevor Rogers — who outdueled far-too-early Cy Young favorite Corbin Burnes in his last outing against the Brewers — sets his sights on a three-time winner of the honor (Max Scherzer) in this one.

Odds as of  May 1st

The Nats have taken the first two games of the series, winning a pitcher’s duel 2-1 Friday in 10 innings then getting past the Fish 7-2 Saturday. Now, Miami hopes to pick up a victory on getaway day with Rogers on the bump in the series finale. Washington is not surprisingly the favorite in the Marlins vs Nationals odds.

The young lefty has been nothing short of a revelation thus far in 2021, going 3-1 in five starts with a 1.29 ERA over 28 innings. He’s tossed three quality starts and has yet to surrender more than two earned runs or strike out less than six in any of his outings. The 23-year-old has been especially crisp in his last two starts while going 13 scoreless innings and striking out 15, while only walking one batter.

Rogers, Front and Center

With highly-touted hurlers Sixto Sanchez and Elieser Hernandez on the shelf to start the season, Rogers has blossomed early on. How he fares against the veteran-laden Washington lineup that has never seen him will be his next big test.

The Nats have won three in a row , including the last two against the Marlins. Kyle Schwarber was the hero Friday — blasting a two-run walk-off homer to right-center in the tenth after Miami had put up a run in the top of the inning after playing nine innings of scoreless ball. Saturday, Josh Harrison was the offensive hero for the Nats, finishing with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, while driving in and scoring a run.

Another player to certainly keep an eye on is Yadiel Hernandez. The 33-year-old Cuban rookie had his four-game streak of multi-hit games snapped Saturday, but he still went 1-for-3 and is batting .391 this season.

Washington is pitching well and getting timely hits lately. But Rogers certainly has the ability to be the stopper for Miami.

Max Factor

Scherzer is looking to bounce back from a brutal outing Tuesday against the Blue Jays that saw him give up a pair of long balls, including a grand slam to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Facing the Fish could be the perfect tonic for Mad Max though, as Scherzer is 13-5 lifetime against the franchise with a 3.11 ERA over 24 starts.

While the talented Jazz Chisholm is on the IL with a left hamstring strain, Jesus Aguilar has helped fill the offensive void for the Marlins of late — including going deep Saturday with a solo shot. The first baseman leads the National League with 22 RBI and is slashing .296/.394/.531. He also has a modicum of career success against Scherzer, going 9-for-32 against the future Hall of Famer (including a home run) — good for a .281 batting average.

But even with Aguilar’s early-season success, the Fish will be hard-pressed to avoid a sweep. The team’s best hitter, Corey Dickerson (who owns a .320 BA), has missed the last two games with groin discomfort. His status Sunday is uncertain. Plus, the speedy Chisholm is also on the shelf.

Considering Scherzer’s career success against Don Mattingly’s ballclub — along with added motivation to put his last start behind him — look for Washington to get the brooms out against Miami.

The pick: Nationals (-154)
