Since being pulled in Game 6 of the World Series, things haven’t been looking up for Blake Snell.

An off-season deal from the Rays to the Padres seemed promising. Snell would get a fresh start and the opportunity to pitch deeper into games. Unfortunately for Snell, he has scuffled in San Diego, to the tune of a 4.99 ERA. The worst mark of his career.

But could he turn things around in the half, starting Saturday against the Nationals?

MLB Picks for July 17th

Matchup Pick Line
San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals Padres -1.5 +126
Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox Under 9.0 -110
Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Yankees -105

Odds as of July 16

San Diego Padres vs Washington Nationals

  • First pitch at 7:05 pm EST; Nationals Park, Washington
  • Blake Snell (3-3, 4.99 ERA) vs Patrick Corbin (6-7, 5.40 ERA)

San Diego pummeled Washington on Friday in the most lopsided game of the night. While the Nats were able to get to Chris Paddack, they had no answer for Jake Cronenworth, who hit for the cycle.

Padres vs Nationals Odds

Team Runline Moneyline Total
San Diego Padres -1.5 (+126) -126 Ov 9.0 (-122)
Washington Nationals +1.5 (-150) +108 Un 11.0 (+100)

Odds as of July 16th at FanDuel

Cronenworth was getting on base before the All-Star break, as he hit .296 in seven games. But while he was scoring runs (seven) he wasn’t driving them in. Then again neither were Fernando Tatis Jr (2-for-20 before the break) or Manny Machado (2-for-14).

On Friday the three drove in seven runs and scored six times. And they know they’ve got to be good in the second half as they look up at the Giants and Dodgers.

Patrick Corbin just hasn’t been able to find it this season. Granted he held the Friars in check in his last outing before the break, but it’s tough to bank on that again.

The Pick: Padres -1.5 (+126)

Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox

  • First pitch at 7:15 pm EST; Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago
  • Jake Odorizzi (3-4, 3.61 ERA) vs Lucas Giolito (7-6, 4.15 ERA)

After the Astros were able to pull ahead and stay ahead on Friday, the White Sox are looking for revenge. And they’ll do so hoping Lucas Giolito has a strong second half in store.

Astros vs White Sox Odds

Team Runline Moneyline Total
Houston Astros -1.5 (+160) -102 Ov 9.0 (-110)
Chicago White Sox +1.5 (-194) -116 Un 9.0 (-110)

Odds as of July 16th at FanDuel

Chicago fell to 0-5 against the Astros this year, and they’ve been outscored 34-9 in the process. Jake Odorizzi hasn’t exactly been known for his lengthy outings this season, but he gives Houston what they need. He’ll have that same luxury on Saturday after Lance McCullers gave the bullpen a break.

Before a blip prior to the All-Star break, Giolito had turned in seven quality starts in eight outings. Houston hitters have logged the fewest strikeouts in the league, so Giolito’s swing-and-miss stuff may not dominate as hoped. If he can’t lead the Sox to their first win against Houston though, he should at least help them keep it close.

The Pick: Under 9.0 (-110)

Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees

  • First pitch at 7:15 pm ET; Yankee Stadium, New York
  • Nathan Eovaldi (9-5, 3.66 ERA) vs Gerrit Cole (9-4, 2.68 ERA)

Things went from bad to worse for the Yankees in just two days. Not only was their Thursday night game postponed because of Covid complications, but their loss on Friday dropped them to 0-7 against the Sox this season.

Red Sox vs Yankees Odds

Team Runline Moneyline Total
Boston Red Sox -1.5 (+145) -115 Ov 8.5 (-115)
New York Yankees +1.5 (-165) -105 Un 8.5 (-105)

Odds as of July 16th at DraftKings

It’s pretty unusual for this classic rivalry to be so one-sided. Even Saturday’s starter and ace Gerrit Cole was punished by Boston in his lone start against them. He gave up six runs (five earned) over five innings and three home runs on June 27.

On the other side, Eovaldi has given up just two runs in 13.2 innings against New York, striking out 13. He’s been hit for three or more runs in three of his last six starts though, after it happened just four times in his first 12.

Cole had a couple of rocky outings himself, but entered the break with a complete game shutout of the Astros. Shorthanded or not, getting New York’s ace at this price is a steal.

The Pick: Yankees (-105)
