Odds as of March 29.

The Dodgers Are the Biggest Favorite

Up against a Colorado team that just traded franchise cornerstone Nolan Arenado, the reigning World Series champions are -303 favorites in their opener. The Dodgers also have, by far, the highest 2021 MLB win total.

The Opening Day start will go to the legend himself Clayton Kershaw.

Colorado will counter with German Marquez, who posted a 5.68 ERA at Coors Field last year, continuing his career-long struggles at home.

The Padres and Cubs Are the Biggest Home Favorites

The San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs are both listed as -227 home favorites in their openers. For the Cubs, it’s all about the opponent. The Pittsburgh Pirates are projected to be the single-worst team in the MLB, for the second straight year. They are the lone team that hasn’t announced an Opening Day starter. Mitch Keller is probably their best option, and he’s still technically a rookie.

The Padres’ opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks, aren’t expected to challenge for the World Series, but they are only two seasons removed from an 85-win campaign. The lopsided odds in this one are almost entirely thanks to the fervor around the Friars. One of their prized offseason acquisitions, Yu Darvish, will get the nod in the opener. He finished second in Cy Young voting last year and will have the MLB’s third-best offense from 2020 backing him up.
