Two of the hottest teams in the major leagues square off when the Boston Red Sox visit the Los Angeles Angels at 9:38 pm ET Monday at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

The Red Sox (53-32) have won nine of their last 10 games, have the best road record in MLB at 26-15, and are slight favorites. The Angels (42-41) are on a four-game winning streak, have won six of their last seven, and have been victorious in nine of their last 12 home games.

The game will feature a matchup of left-handed starting pitchers as Martin Perez (6-4, 4.04) goes for the Red Sox against Jose Suarez (3-1, 1.98).

Perez Back on Track

Perez has pitched well his last three times through the rotation, going 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA. He has also allowed two earned runs or less in 10 of his 13 starts this season.

Last Wednesday, Perez beat the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park. He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out two and walking none.

Perez, though, has just three quality starts this season and gone five straight appearances without one. He is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA in six road starts and 3-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 starts at night.

Perez pitched six shutout innings to beat the Angels May 15 in Boston. He has a 6-5 career record against the Angels with a 4.02 ERA in 19 career games, including 15 starts, and is 3-3 with a 4.03 ERA in eight games at Angel Stadium.

Perez will have to deal with the sensational Shohei Ohtani. The designated hitter leads MLB with 31 home runs and has gone deep in 11 of his last 17 games with a total of 14 longballs in that span.

While Perez has pitched as many as six innings just three time this season, he is backed by a strong bullpen. The Red Sox’s relief ERA is 2.36 in the last 18 games and left-hander Josh Taylor has made 25 consecutive scoreless appearances covering 20.1 innings.

Perez will have to deal with the sensation Shohei Ohtani, who leads MLB with 31 home runs. The designated hitter has gone deep in 11 of his last 17 games, totaling 14 longballs in that span.

Second baseman David Fletcher has an 18-game hitting streak, the best of his career, and is 3 for 8 against Perez in his career with a double and a home run.

During the streak, Fletcher is hitting .380 (27 for 71) with seven doubles and eight RBIs

Third baseman Anthony Rendon is 0 for 7 against the Perez but is not expected to play after leaving Sunday’s win over the Baltimore Orioles with left hamstring tightness. Outfielder Taylor Ward (right index finger) is also doubtful.

Left fielder Justin Upton (right lower back strain) could be activated from the injured list.

The Angels have scored five runs or more in six of their last seven games. They have won 11 of their last 15 games against left-handed starters.

Suarez Gets Start

Suarez will make his first start of the season following nine relief appearance, including an impressive one last Monday against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He went 5.1 innings and gave up only one run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Suarez has a 2.45 ERA in three home games for the Angels in 2021 and a 2.70 mark in four night games.

Suarez has made 17 career starts since arriving in the big leagues in 2019, going 2-8 with a 7.92 ERA. He was 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts for Triple-A Salt Lake this year.

He has faced the Red Sox once, getting a no-decision as a rookie when he yielded four runs in five innings in a start.

Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts has reached base safely in 26 games, tying a career high. DH J.D. Martinez has been on base in 22 straight games.

The Red Sox expect infielder Christian Arroyo (right knee contusion) to be activated from the IL prior to the game.

Holiday Winners

Both teams notched one-run victories Sunday.

The Angels rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Orioles to complete a three-game series sweep at the Big A. Ohtani hit a home run in the third inning and Juan Lagares had a walk-off two-run double in the ninth inning.

After Los Angeles loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, Lagares drove a ball to the gap in right-center, extending the Angels’ winning streak to five games. Closer Raisel Iglesias (6-3) got the win.

Ohtani tied the MLB record for the most homers in a season by a Japanese-born player when he blasted a 459-foot solo shot to straightaway center. Less than an hour later, Ohtani became the first player in MLB history to be picked for an All-Star Game as both a hitter and pitcher.

Rendon also homered before being injured.

The Red Sox edged the Athletics 1-0 in Oakland to take two of three in the series. Boston’s run scored when Rafael Devers grounded into a double play in the sixth inning.

All-Star closer Matt Barnes earned his 19th save in 23 chances.

Red Sox Won First Series

The Red Sox took two of three from the Angels in Boston from May 14-16 and have won 12 of 16 meetings since 2018.

As the odds indicate, this game is a close call. Let’s go with the Red Sox, especially with Perez pitching well lately and backed by a strong bullpen.
