It’s been a great week to be a Philadelphia Phillies fan. The Phillies (69-55, 36-29 home) had won three straight entering play on Thursday, and will welcome back 2022 NL MVP Bryce Harper back to the lineup on Friday after a two month absence.
Harper’s first game back will be against the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates (47-77, 21-41 away), which is surely more music to Philly fans ears.

Pittsburgh vs Philadelphia Probable Pitchers
The Phillies, who enter play as a top-10 World Series odds contender, are set up for a big night offensively. That’s because they’ll get to face 24-year-old Bryse Wilson, who can’t seem to keep the ball in the yard.
Bryse Wilson is like the Tristan Jarry of baseball. Good, good, good, good … whoa, buddy. What are you doing?
Anyway, gives up another homer. Solo shot from TJ Friedl. Reds ahead, 3-0.

He’s allowed seven home runs in four August starts, posting a 4.37 ERA along the way. Wilson has coughed up seven runs and 11 hits over his past 12 innings of work, and has been crushed by the Philadelphia lineup over a small sample size.
Wilson has allowed 10 of the 23 batters he’s faced to reach base, yielding a .739 slugging percentage and 1.219 OPS. Just another reason for Phillies fans to get excited.
Wilson vs Falter Stats
2-7 | Record | 1-3 |
5.74 | ERA | 4.40 |
1.44 | WHIP | 1.29 |
.297 | OBA | .263 |
2.6 | SO/W Ratio | 3.1 |
While Phillies hitters are set-up for success, it could be a long night for the Pirates bats. That’s because Philadelphia starter Bailey Falter has pitched very well lately.
The 25-year-old has allowed just three runs and seven hits over his past 12 innings, and is just one start removed from shutting down Pittsburgh. Falter held the Pirates to two runs over 6 innings just under a month ago, scattering five hits and striking out eight.
Bailey Falter will start in Zack Wheeler's place tomorrow night against the Pirates.
Wheeler is eligible to be activated on Sept. 6, but right now we don't know anything about the injury.

He’s been in and out of the rotation all season, and is making another start on Friday thanks to the Zack Wheeler injury. Wheeler was recently placed on the IL list for undisclosed reasons.
Pirates vs Phillies Betting Analysis
Philadelphia has dominated the season series, winning all four matchups by a combined 10 runs. Oddsmakers are expecting more of the same on Friday and so should we. The Phillies were already a top-seven offense and now they’re adding one of the top-three hitters in baseball back into the mix.

Harper was tearing the cover off the ball when he went down, posting a .318 average with 15 home runs and 48 RBI. Last year’s leader in the NL MVP odds looked like his old self during a recent minor league assignment, going 5-for-8, with two homers and six RBI.
The craziest thing about Bryce Harper: even after missing over two months he is still the second-most valuable Phillies position player by fWAR with 2.7, second only to J.T. Realmuto.
It's funny how it was kind of glossed over that he was on an MVP-like pace prior to his injury.

Philadelphia has a slash line of .292/.335/.454 in August, which is their best mark of any month. They’re averaging five runs per contest and have reached 30 home runs for the fourth consecutive month.
Things are little less rosy for Pittsburgh to put it mildly. They’ve dropped five straight and 11 of their past 13 overall. They rank second last in MLB in run differential, and last in the NL in runs per game, average, slugging and OPS. The Pirates are slashing .215/.273/.333 over the past 14 days, averaging only 3.2 runs per outing.

Pirates vs Phillies Pick
Pittsburgh has been outscored by 31 runs over their recent five-game skid, while 12 of their last 14 losses have come by multiple runs. With a struggling Wilson on the mound versus one of the most potent lineups in baseball, expect a similar result on Friday.
Philadelphia has taken eight of the last nine matchups in the series, winning six times by multiple runs. Lay the -1.5 with the Phillies.
Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -1.5 (-120)
