The Rangers (14-9, 6-5 away) versus Reds (9-15, 8-6 home) series was supposed to be a major mismatch. Texas began the week as the top team in the AL West, while Cincinnati was occupying the NL Central’s basement.

So far through two games, the Rangers have failed to live up to their early season hype. Texas has dropped each of the first two games of this three-game set, but online sportsbooks are bullish they can avoid the sweep in Wednesday’s MLB odds.

Texas vs Cincinnati Probable Pitchers

The Rangers enter play on Wednesday as a top-12 World Series odds contender, while the Reds boast the fourth longest price to win the title.

Texas will give the ball to Jon Gray, who’s fresh off his worst start of the season. Gray coughed up six hits and four runs to the lowly A’s, walking five batters and striking out only two. Walks have been a major issue for Gray so far in 2023, as he’s issued more free passes (9) than he’s recorded strikeouts (8) over his last three starts.

The right-hander has never been a major strikeout producer, but this season he’s whiffing batters at one of the lowest rates of his career. His 7.0 K/rate is the second lowest mark he’s ever recorded, while his .358 opponent OBP is his worst mark since his rookie campaign.

Prior to 2022, Gray spent his first seven major league seasons in Colorado, so he has plenty of history versus the Reds hitters in the MLB starting lineups. Current Cincinnati batters are hitting .293 against him over 58 at-bats, with a .534 slugging percentage and .884 OPS.

1.45 WHIP 1.17
.246 OBA .200
1.4 SO/W Ratio 2.2

The Reds will counter with sophomore Graham Ashcraft, who’s off to a fine start to the season. Ashcraft has yielded two runs or less in all four of his starts, despite facing some pretty stiff competition.

He’s already matched up with the NL Central leading Pirates twice, as well as top National League contenders Atlanta and Philadelphia. The 25-year-old has surrendered only one home run all season, and just one run and eight hits over 13 innings at home.

Rangers vs Reds Betting Stats

Ashcraft will have his hands full on Wednesday, as the Rangers bring baseball’s number two offense to the plate. Texas is averaging 6.59 runs per contest, nearly a full run more than every team not named the Rays.

The Rangers have crossed the plate 76 times over their past nine games, including 12 times in this series’ first two contests. The problem is, they’ve yielded 14 runs to the light-hitting Reds.

Adolis Garcia has been pacing the offense through 23 games, recording 7 home runs and an AL best 28 RBI. Texas has raced out to 5-1 and 6-0 leads in the first two outings this week, but their bullpen has blown both cushions.

The comeback victories have been out of character for Cincinnati, as this team had been dreadful at the plate prior to this week. They scored just six runs total during a six-game losing streak, and rank in the bottom-10 in nearly every key offensive category.

Jason Vosler is the lone Reds batter with more than two home runs, while none of Cincy’s hitters have a WAR greater than 0.7.

Rangers vs Reds Predictions

Which is why we’re fading Cincinnati’s bats on Wednesday. Yes, Gray has struggled and the Rangers bullpen has been a mess this week, but the Reds are truly devoid of major offensive talent.

Cincy’s lineup has been especially porous with runners on base this season, slashing .219/.317/.324. That should give bettors more confidence in Gray, especially given his control issues, and it’s important to note how well Texas’ relievers were faring prior to this week.

Rangers vs Reds 2023 H2H Results

Date Away Team Home Team Result
April 25 Rangers Reds CIN, 7-6
April 24 Rangers Reds CIN, 7-6

The Rangers bullpen still boasts the second lowest ERA in baseball, and the second highest WAR. Their performances on Monday and Tuesday were outliers, and we should expect them to silence Cincinnati once Gray exits on Wednesday.

Pick: Cincinnati Reds Under 4 Runs (-120)
