  • Martinez produced career-best numbers in most statistical categories in 2018
  • The 31-year-old led the AL with 130 RBI, while finishing second with 43 home runs
  • Red Sox outfielder poised for another strong season but may struggle to match some of last season’s numbers

Boston Red Sox outfielder JD Martinez is coming off a spectacular season in 2018, in which he set career highs in batting average, hits, RBI, and runs, while falling just short of the major league lead in home runs.

After capping the year with a World Series victory, Martinez looks poised for another productive campaign. Here’s a look at how he stacks up on the MLB season props at sportsbooks, and where to look for value.

JD Martinez Projected 2019 Batting Average

Total Odds
Over .300 -115
Under .300 -115

A fixture in the meat of the order, Martinez spent equal time batting third and clean up last season, with the impressive results. The 31-year-old closed out 2018 with 569 at bats and a career-high batting average of .330.

JD Martinez Five-Year Stats Snapshot

Year Team At-Bats Home Runs RBI Average
2018 Red Sox 569 43 130 .330
2017 Tigers/Diamondbacks 432 45 104 .303
2016 Tigers 460 22 68 .307
2015 Tigers 596 38 102 .282
2014 Tigers 441 23 76 .315

While maintaining such a lofty average represents a huge challenge, topping .300 shouldn’t be. Martinez has been a steady producer at the plate in recent years, hitting over .300 in four of the past five years, with the lone exception coming in 2015, when he compiled a respectable .282 average on a Detroit Tigers squad that won just 74 games on their way to a last place finish in the AL Central.

Pick: OVER .300 (-115)

JD Martinez Projected 2019 Runs

Total Odds
Over 99.5 -115
Under 99.5 -115

Martinez benefited from a heavy workload in 2018, appearing in 150 games, and tallied a career-high 111 runs for a Red Sox squad that led the majors in scoring with 876 runs. Boston should benefit from the tempered expectations facing AL East rivals Baltimore, Tampa Bay, and Toronto in its quest to repeat as AL East champions.

Martinez should benefit too, after racking up 41 of his 111 runs against the Orioles, Rays, and Blue Jays. With the Red Sox returning to action with their hard-hitting lineup largely intact, and Martinez already getting regularly slotted in ahead of Xander Bogaerts, he should quickly find himself on pace to once again crack 100 runs this season.

Pick: OVER 99.5 runs (-115)

JD Martinez Projected 2019 Home Runs

Total Odds
Over 39.5 -115
Under 39.5 -115

Following a red-hot start, the Red Sox cooled off somewhat in early May of last season. But while Boston slumped, Martinez stayed in his groove, connecting on 13 home runs during the month to maintain the torrid pace he established in the spring of 2017. Martinez’ sweet swing paid immediate dividends for the  Red Sox, with the club going 11-1 in the month of May when he went yard.

That performance also helped to keep Martinez in the hunt to lead the AL in home runs. But it was not a pace he was able to sustain, with the Red Sox slugger hitting no more than seven dingers in each of the final four month of the season to finish with 43 home runs.

And while Martinez has cracked double-digits in long balls in at least one month in each of the past two seasons, and hit 25 or more before the All-Star Break in three of the past four years, he has never proven capable of maintaining a torrid pace throughout an entire season.

There is no reason to expect that to change in 2019.

Pick: UNDER 39.5 home runs (-115)

JD Martinez Projected 2019 RBI

Total Odds
Over 110.5 -115
Under 110.5 -115

Martinez was a model of consistency at the plate last season. Despite a slight drop off in production over the final month of season, Martinez marched to an AL-leading 130 RBI, and has now topped 100 RBI in consecutive seasons for the first time in his career.

While matching last season’s RBI production remains a lofty goal, Martinez should enjoy ample opportunities with runners on base, and once again be among the leading run generators in the majors in 2019.

Pick: OVER 110.5 RBI (-115)
