The Tigers send out left-hander Matt Boyd in Game 2 of this series, while the Stros counter with Jake Odorizzi, who will be making his season debut for Houston after signing a two-year deal in early March.

Boyd Looking to Turn Around Fortunes Against Houston

Boyd has enjoyed two quality starts so far this season, most recently tossing seven innings and giving up three earned to the Twins last week. On the year, the lefty has a 1-1 record and 2.13 ERA.

Tuesday’s opponent in Houston though has not been kind to Boyd. He’s surrendered seven homers in just four starts against the Astros while compiling a 5.91 ERA.

The 30-year-old hasn’t pitched at Minute Maid since way back in 2015 though and several guys in this lineup who previously hit him around play elsewhere now. In fact, Houston’s current core is hitting just .178 off Boyd.

Astros Stats vs Boyd

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
Jose Altuve 8 2 1 2 0 .250
Michael Brantley 16 5 0 2 2 .313
Alex Bregman 7 1 0 0 2 .143
Jason Castro 5 0 0 0 1 .000
Carlos Correa 6 2 0 1 1 .250
Aledmys Diaz 7 2 1 1 0 .286
Yuli Gurriel 5 0 0 0 0 .000
Martin Maldonado 10 1 1 2 3 .100

Although it was a cold night for the bats on Monday, Houston has been raking. They’re hitting .274 as a team and have clubbed 18 long balls, which is tied for first in the majors.

Their big hitters like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and Michael Brantley are all putting up solid numbers early on, which is a very good sign for this offense. Yuli Gurriel is also tearing the cover off the baseball right now, batting .400.

Houston is scoring 6.2 runs per game as well. That puts them third in the bigs. Not a lot of arms have been able to stop them, but Casey Mize certainly put in work on Monday.

Odorizzi Makes His Debut

We haven’t seen a lot of Odorizzi across the last two seasons. He pitched just 13.2 innings in 2020 with Minnesota due to several injuries, but the veteran right-hander is now healthy.

This was a solid addition for the Houston staff though. Odorizzi has been around the block and enjoyed a respectable amount of success at the major-league level with a career 3.92 ERA.

He’s also shoved in 12 starts versus Detroit, going 6-1 while collecting an impressive 3.09 ERA.

Tigers Stats vs Odorizzi

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG
Jeimer Candelario 10 1 0 1 1 .100
Harold Castro 9 0 0 2 1 .000
Willi Castro 5 0 0 0 3 .000
Niko Goodrum 10 2 0 1 4 .200
Robbie Grossman 9 2 0 0 2 .222
Jacoby Jones 8 0 0 0 3 .000
Nomar Mazara 11 3 0 4 4 .273
Jonathan Schoop 34 12 1 3 7 .353

Detroit came to play in the series opener, lighting up Zack Greinke for six runs in just 4.2 innings of work. They went deep three times off the veteran, with rookie Akil Baddoo continuing his blazing start with two hits, including a homer.

The youngster hadn’t played a game over high-A before the Tigers picked him up in the Rule 5 Draft last December. Baddoo then showed extremely well in Spring Training, which led to him miraculously making the big league roster. He sure hasn’t disappointed either, already hitting .368 with three bombs. Talk about a story.

Baddoo has been the highlight of this Detroit offense and it will be interesting to see how the 22-year old fares against Odorizzi. Jonathan Schoop is by far the most experienced bat in the lineup vs. Houston’s right-hander and will be looking to keep swinging it well with Odorizzi on the bump.

Best Bet

It’s going to be very tough for Detroit to keep the Astros’ offense quiet for a second-straight game. Even towards the end of game 1 of the series, they started to put together some good at-bats, even hitting two solo home runs.

Boyd’s track record against Houston isn’t good and I believe they’re going to thrive off that. It’s hard to know what Odorizzi will bring to the table in his first start for the ball club, but given the history vs. Detroit, I think he’ll be more than solid enough.

Considering the number of runs the Stros usually score, there will be value in the over here because the Tigers will also put up a couple themselves.

Pick: Houston Astros (-194), Over 9 Runs (-114)
