Probable Pitchers
The Blue Jays will have it tough here with Cole getting the ball. The right-hander has been the standout performer in the Yankees rotation this season, posting a 16-8 record and 3.08 ERA in 29 starts. He’s also second in the American League in strikeouts, racking up an impressive 237 K’s in 175 innings of work. However, Cole is coming off two rather average outings.

Although he got the win, the former UCLA star surrendered three earned runs and five hits across six frames against the Red Sox at Fenway. Five days before that, Cole was lit up for seven runs and 10 hits by Cleveland. The home run has also been a problem during these starts, allowing three of them. In fact, Cole has a 4.61 ERA in September. On a more positive note though, the 31-year-old has pitched very well vs Toronto in 2021, compiling a 2.74 ERA in four appearances.
Cole vs Berrios
16-8 | Record | 12-9 |
3.08 | ERA | 3.48 |
175.1 | Innings Pitched | 186 |
237 | SO | 197 |
41 | BB | 45 |
Berrios is fresh off two starts against his former team, the Minnesota Twins. In the process, he gave up six earned runs but managed to keep his team in both games. On the year, Berrios boasts a 3.48 ERA and 12-9 record in 31 outings. He’s also struck out 197 in 186 frames. The Puerto Rico native has given the Jays much-needed longevity across the last month. In fact, he’s pitched at least six innings in each of his previous six outings dating back to August 29th.

Since joining Toronto, Berrios has also compiled a 3.50 ERA. He’s faced the Yankees once this season and enjoyed some success, allowing just two earned runs in 6.2 innings. However, in his career, Berrios has an ERA just under five vs. New York. On a more positive note though, he pitches slightly better at home with a 3.20 ERA compared to 3.80 on the road.

After a red-hot span where their bats were firing on all cylinders, the Jays have slowed down since. Prior to this Yankees series, Toronto split a four-game set with the Minnesota Twins and then dropped two of three to Tampa before that. Following their loss on Tuesday to New York, the Jays are now 2.5 games back of the Yanks and a half-game behind Boston for the final Wild Card spot. These next two contests are absolutely crucial if Charlie Montoyo’s squad is going to have any chance at making the postseason.

On the other hand, the Yankees are showing up at the best possible time. They rolled into Fenway and swept the Red Sox and have now won seven straight. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are absolutely raking right now, with the latter going deep in every game against Boston and clubbing a three-run bomb on Tuesday, while Judge also left the yard in the win over Toronto.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Prediction
New York is just too hot offensively right now. I also don’t see Cole giving up a lot of runs considering how he’s pitched against Toronto. Berrios meanwhile, has had his troubles with the Yankees lineup over the years. That being said, take the Bronx Bombers on the moneyline here.
Pick: New York Yankees moneyline (-120)
